Word For The Day, Tuesday, April 12, 2011

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quab

-n

An unfledged bird; hence, something immature or unfinished.

[Cf. D. kwab eelpout, Dan. quabbe, G. quabbe, quappe, LG. quabbe a fat lump of flesh, and L. capito a kind of fish with a large head, fr. caput the head, also E. squab.]

I think the major disconnect here is between those who see a “/” sign and just assume that everything after it is in the denominator of the division expression.

And those who see “/” as a mathematical operation between expressions on either side of it.

The former force implied parentheses into their evaluation.

The latter do not.

That’s the way you see much of the argument play out.

Many re-write it like this...

48

2(9+3)

It’s just not how the order of operations goes.

I could give some people the benefit of the doubt that they are simply reading everything to the right of the / as the denominator. But they insist on making silly arguments about the distributive property, etc. to justify what they are doing. Like claiming 2(x+y) means something different than 2*(x+y).

There is no multipication or division symbol between the 2 and the ()...so that function takes precedence over the division in that problem. You cannot divide before finishing that one.......THEN you go left to right.

The multiplication is implied. Just cause it’s implied doesn’t mean you ignore the rules of precedence.

You’d think one of these would mention this exception if it existed.

Yes, but the 48 is divided by the entire statement of 2(9+3)....which indicates ONE number.

The division symbol does not make everything after it the denominator. It means that division should be done at that point, following the rules of order of operations.

What is 9 / 3 * 3?
