The 20 Greatest Guitar Solos Of All Time (or "What I Did With My Wednesday Night")

Our Greatest Guitar Solo Of All Time poll certainly caused some fierce debate amongst guitarists… and that was just in our office. Choosing the 'greatest' guitar solo is obviously subjective in the extreme. But Guitarist had other motivations too – we were eager to see how many modern solos have impressed you all in the thirteen years since our last solo poll. The results were suprising. After asking for your nominations, we took the 20 most popular and asked for you vote on which your though was most deserving here and at MusicRadar. You voted in your thousands, fanbases were motivated and old favourites suffered.

Any Steve Morse fans here?

Saw the Dixie Dregs live in Knoxville, TN in about 1990. They were pretty amazing.

4 very good players in Holdworth, Wetton, Eddie Jobson and Bruford.

Here is half of UK ripping it up ona Roxy Music song. Wetton’s bass playing is fantastic as is Eddie’s violin playing. Eddie Jobson was probably 18 in this video. It is really great from about 2:28 til the end.

From 3:15 on it is insane between the bass and violin. Great stuff.

Steve Lukather — outro solo on Roseanna

The best Lukather solo is the ending solo on The Tubes' 'Talk To Ya Later.'

Here’s another great Gilmour solo. Solo kicks in at the 5:15 mark

It’s not for nothing that Buck is often deemed “rock’s most under-rated guitar player”.

BOC...on tour forever.

It was so great on that tour to see Gilmour and Wright get to do Echoes one last time. Wright’s vocals were a key part of the early Floyd sound that was badly missed.

I remember Toto’s “Hydra” album, by far the heaviest album Toto ever did, Lukather had tons of great solos on that one.

Slash and his idol/inspiration, Alice.

I’ve had someone here tell me Slash “made no difference” in this song but I’ve heard it played with Alice’s tour band many times.
They’re a good, tight band...but Slash makes ALL the difference.

Excellent post! I remember being blown away when I discovered "Pyramid" as a junior in High School.

Don't forget the solo on "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" from "I, Robot."

I’ve never heard that one before. I’ve got Toto IV on vinyl that I wore out as a kid, especially Africa which is almost unlistenable from groove wear. It’s funny, I bought a copy of IV on eBay recently to replace it and its Africa was worn out too.
