Nobody could mix rhythm and leads like Jimi, he made it look effortless.
I remember reading about that. It didn't seem to slow him down any. Listening to Sabbath growing up, it influenced me into taking up the classical guitar.
Anything by Jason Becker
and (completely non metal) Roy Clark could probably play a hairbrush.
No doubt Satriani is incredible and I love his work immensely. His newer stuff with Chickenfoot just plain rocks.
That said, (opinion only) Vai exceeded his teacher. They are both like greased lightning speedwise, but to me, Vai has alot of emotion and experimentalism in his playing where Satch is more straight traditional style playing amped up to 12 with occasional forays into beautiful strangeness.
I could (and do) listen to both for hours. And the G3 vids? Heaven!
Becker is one of the great tragedies in the guitar world. He and Marty Friedman together were wild. ALS ended what could have been a career for the ages.

And don’t forget Shawn Lane....
I enjoy them, too. I always learn a lot.
Psycho Holiday and Floods. Awesome!
Edward bump! Eruption! I also like Frampton’s “Do you feel like I do?” It is not a solo but what the heck!
There is to many to list.
“Sophisticated” is the right word. So is “Intelligent.” I know that Yes was supposedly the band that fit those bills, but APP went far beyond. Under appreciated genius.
The fate of Jason Becker made me question things. Becker gets ALS but Paris Hilton is still alive? God is going to need to explain that one to me.
Awesome song! I remember that year well...’riding around’ was all the rage and Framptom comes Alive was blaring out of everyone’s car. lol Or going to the river building bonfires and sitting around listening to Framptom and others. Great song...great memories...

I’ve also posted (several times) that, IMHO, my favorite solo of all time is Beyond the Realms of Death by Judas Priest. Thoughts?
I knew that. What a leap in style. Like going from the third grade to college.
That would Frampton... *rolling eyes*
And how could we leave out Vernon Reid’s solo on “Cult of Personality.”
Hey thank you!
Yea but he did do alot of good writing, until he went solo and then he sucked.
Yes, atonal and super cool. It’s one of those where I’ll wait to turn off the car if it’s coming up.
I love Eric Johnson. His “Cliffs of Dover” may be the greatest guitar song ever recorded.
That is the name of the song. One of these days. The album is called Meddle. I still have no Idea what the whole line is. “One of these days Im going to, something”. Any help freepers?
