You also went where it made the most sense for you and your family to go. Merchant Marines served where our nation needed them to serve. Casualty rate aside - it was a noble and needed endeavor and our nation should be grateful for their service.

Russell Johnson, best known as “The Professor” on Gilligan’s Island, was a B-25 bombardier during World War II, after completing the Army Air Corps aviation cadet program. His aircraft was shot down during a mission over the Philippines in early 1945 and he was injured in the crash. His decorations include the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. Some accounts indicate he remained in the Air Force Reserve until 1958.

After his role in the 1955 film, Blackboard Jungle, he entered the United States Army for two years serving overseas in Japan and Korea. His tour of Korea was after the hostilities ended.[7] In his M*A*S*H role as Max Klinger he can be seen wearing his actual issued set of U.S. Army dog tags.
