Here in CT you can elect to have the license plate stay with you and even pass it on to your children.

In CA the plates stayed with the car.

Here in WA you have to get a new plate every 7 years - required by law. The law states you must replace your license plates every 7 years when you renew your vehicle tabs and it is due to the reflective coating on the plates have only has a 5-year guarantee. And of course you are charged for the plate replacement.
