You're right about the WWII vets and what they were armed with -- the same guys that cleaned the shelves of ammo and reloading components during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Also a sprinkling of Korea vets and deer rifles, but I'm told (I wasn't there) that it looked like a Springfield and Garand convention. In those days you could bring home all sorts of stuff from the Army and nobody cared. My dad had a basement full of things he had no business having (but we kids loved it!)

West of Connector isn't that bad anymore. Since the gentrification from 14th and Howell Mill down to Coca-Cola and the Aquarium, the bad actors have mostly moved further west. They still come over and mug Georgia Tech students because they know they are not armed. My grandfather (Tech '18 EE) would not recognize the wussy, screaming liberal, politically-correct administration at Tech today. But he would have a thing or two to say to them.

I was thinking more of the area from Ponce south into the Renaissance Parkway, Boulevard, and Auburn area. Much worse than the Tech/Williams St. area IMHO.

I'll keep my eye peeled for the next FR get-together.

Oh, yeah, good point about that area. Not a place someone traveling through would be likely to end up in. And yes, from the north Connector West roughly to the railroad tracks isn’t bad, but across the tracks all bets are off. And of course I-20 West from the Connector to the Perimeter - fuggetaboutit!
