CBS Outdoor and Clear Channel are cashing in on the disturbing end-of-the-world ad campaign in the Bay State as dozens of expensive local billboards are plastered with a doom and gloom “Judgment Day” May 21 message.
Michael Garcia, who is heading the billboard blitz for Family Radio, a California-based Christian network, said the ads are emblazoned on 50 Clear Channel properties in the Boston market and on another half-dozen CBS Outdoor-owned billboards.
Between 1,200 and 1,500 of the ominous billboards are strewn around the country, mostly on CBS-owned properties, according to Family Radio. One industry insider estimates the national billboard campaign is costing between $3 million and $5 million — “easily.”
The ads — set on a brown background with the silhouette of a man crouching before a setting sun — were recently spotted on two CBS-owned “tri-vision” billboards along Interstate 93 near Dorchester and Route 128 in Braintree. Those pricey spots command between $8,000 and $12,000 a month, the insider said.
CBS Outdoor wouldn’t comment on the Judgment Day ads yesterday and Clear Channel didn’t get back to MediaBiz — but the man behind the billboard campaign had plenty to say about what’s in store for us on May 21.
“It will be the first day of the beginning of the end,” said Garcia, a West Coast father of six, who warns that a “big and mighty” earthquake will hit that will make the one in Japan look like “kindergarten recess.”
The earthquake, Garcia added, will start in New Zealand and work its way to the United States. “It’s terrifying,” he said.
But don’t be fooled. The message here isn’t about the end of the world. It seems to be more about corporate greed.

The problem with the “May 21st = Judgement Day” campaign is not Clear Channel making money off it, it is the loss of faith and loss of face that will occur when May 22nd arrives and Judgement Day hasn’t happened. The Bible says that no man shall know:
“Mark 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.”
This is a remarkable statement - insofar as that despite the communion that Jesus had with the father while on earth, that this information was even withheld from him during his earthly incarnation!
Why the heck then would it be revealed to Harold Camping?
Ridiculous...and yet he will go along his merry way, and when May 22nd rolls around mutter something about miscalculation and try and keep his radio business afloat despite unbelievers saying “oh, there go those wacky Christians again.”
Don’t get me wrong - there is plenty for unbelievers to dislike Christianity without having to manufacture stuff. like this.
Camping has predicted before and he has been wrong before. In 1994 he said the end would come and his faithful were in their Sunday best, Bibles open, waiting for the moment. Some of them believe him this time, too.

I wonder if Camping will turn in the licenses of his radio stations, or sell them, just before the date? (Actually I guess 5/21 is to be the beginning of the end and it all ends on 10/21)

I have listened to his radio network for a while off and on for a couple years...purely for entertainment as I don't buy his predictions. But he really really seems convinced of the May 21 date--to the point of absolute certainty. I cringe to think what he and his disciples will go through when May 22 rolls around and they are still here and the Earth was not being ripped up by massive earthquakes.
According to how I heard Camping describe it, anybody left on earth after May 21 is doomed with no hope of salvation and the Earth will be in the process of being destroyed. He predicts that around sunset on May 21, starting first in the East (Japan etc) and ending in the west (Alaska etc) there will be an Earthquake that is absurdly strong killing and destroying just about everything that will cover every square inch of the Earth (as each part of the globe gets to sunset). Moreover he insists everyone who was saved will be raptured on that day (I think he means that it also goes around the Earth at sunset that way--saved people being caught up to Heaven right before the earthquake)
So there would indeed be no point in having the radio station after May 21
Also, we should know hear about an massive Earthquake like nothing anyone has ever hear of before starting in the Eastern part of the world on the afternoon of May 20...if he is right.
Caught the end of Camping on the Michael Smerconish show tonight (WTKK Boston) and he mentioned how he’s right,
this will happen, the Bible guarantees it etc. Someone called in later and said Coast to Coast (overnight talk show) had Camping on and asked him if he’d like to come back on 5/22
“if your prediction turns out to be wrong”. Camping refused to take them up on it. Anyway the earthquakes would be at 6 pm local time in each time zone. (Another talk show I heard,
Dan Rea at WBZ in Boston, had a Camping follower on and
the host joked that the earthquakes would be on just in
time for the 6:00 news...)
Smerconish was wondering if people would be giving away their earthly possessions just before this. Would Camping give away his radio stations? He’s not bothering—and when asked where he would be on May 22, Camping replied,
“in heaven”.
Two things about this. One, yeah, I’m going to tell my 17 year old. “Sorry about your birthday. We’re all going to die tomorrow.” and secondly, the billboards call for repentance. I doubt most people who are complete sinners (such as myself) could repent enough to be raptured within the week.
The True Believers will say “we’ll celebrate your birthday in heaven” maybe...
btw someone spent his life savings-=$140,000—on putting up the doomsday posters.

Maybe these liberal leaning companies are trying to minimize ‘Armed Forces Day’ - which is Saturday, May 21, 2011.
