Yea, that's the way to do it. There's absolutely no reason to give custody to the police.

And it's amazing how greedy the state and police can be. It would be hilarious if it didn't make me so angry. The state of Missouri actually wound up suing the Kansas City Police Department for misappropriation of funds. You see, if a PD in MO confiscates property in the investigation of a crime, there's a state law that that property belongs to the state, and it goes into the "general fund." On the other hand, if a local PD works in cooperation with federal agencies, the feds will share the booty directly with the PD. So what Kansas City's PD started doing was doing the investigations, but before busting the bad guys, they'd call in the feds and allow them to bust the bad guys! That way, the KCPD got to keep some of the booty!

The state wound up suing the PD. I don't remember who won.

Here's the contact information for the mayor's office.

http://www.ci.dallas.tx.us/forms/mcc/mayor_mail_contactus.htm

Here's the note I sent His Honor:

Ashley Donaldson, and the whole country, learned something useful. The Dallas Police Department apparently does not consist of honorable peace officers in business to serve and protect, but of mercenary thugs.

OK -- a kid does the right thing. The cops get $2,000 to toss into their doughnut fund. And the city gets a black eye in front of the whole nation.

The decision to punish, rather than to reward, Ashley's honesty, makes Dallas an uglier place to live. You get what you reward, you suppress what you punish. Someone decided that a less honest, a less honorable, Dallas was a desirable thing.

Kindly find out who that someone was, fire his ass, and make things right. The ball in in your court.

Well, Potter was nothing if not an extreme stereotype of the evil bastard manipulator, a lot like George Soros of today, but on a local level. And of course it was a crime since he KNEW it was left there accidentally by Mitchell and once he seized the 8K it provided exactly the leverage he needed to throw the Bailey S&L into insolvency.

This cop isn’t worthy to stay in TX. They should fire him and send him a ticket to California.

"We appreciate your honesty," said Dallas police spokesman Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse. "We're going to put the money to good use for the city government of Dallas."

Damn...You know these people in city governments are near broke...Everyone outside government is now a target for money and revenue.

It's your entire city government there in Texas that made the decision, not your just one Texas cop.

Don't push off your greedy Texas government employees on us...We have enough.

police said under a new city policy, the unclaimed money will go into Dallas' government — not back to the person who found it, as in years past.

And no, we don't want the entire city of Dallas...Keep it.

We don’t want ‘em. :)

You can keep ‘em. I’m sure they’ll feel right at home in CA.

Glad to see the lady has an acct set up with Chase. I suspect she’s right that she’ll get more out of making the right decision than she would had she just kept the money. TX is just awesome like that.

You're a little slow?

Once again, this is the policy for the entire city of Dallas, not one cop.

And no, you can keep it.

Why do you think I’m trying to send them to California? :)

Houston, Dallas has a problem.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dallas City Hall could face another massive budget deficit for 2011-12

The city of Dallas is only a few months into its current budget, but it already is looking ahead to what could be yet another bleak fiscal year on the horizon.

In a briefing to the City Council that will be presented today, City Manager Mary Suhm calculates that — in the best possible outcome — the city will be $41 million in the hole as it seeks to balance revenues and expenditures in 2011-12.

The worry is that, in addressing its $17 billion to $25 billion deficit, the state will pass more costs along to cities — something Dallas can ill afford.

In September, the council voted 8-7 to raise the tax rate, nearly the maximum allowed by law, to help close a deficit that swelled to nearly $200 million in early 2010.

I found a velvet bag filled with beautiful jewelry in the ladies room of the Ritz Carlton in Boston. I took it to the front desk immediately. Two days later I called to find out if it had been claimed. They had no record of it.

Next time I’ll know enough to keep it and make sure it gets back to the rightful owner.

I guess from now on everyone should contact the police and give a description of what they have found.

A few months ago I found over $100 in cash in an envelope at the side of the road. I called the police and they said I could turn it in. If no one found it then it would go into the police fund. They had no mechanism for keeping a record of the find so I put several ads on Craigs List. No response. I'm still looking for a nice charity to give it to.

I’ve found lots of things. Once found a $20 in front of a cashier register at our local convenience store. Silly me wanted to make a point to my kids and handed it over to the cashier and stated to please make sure that if someone comes in that lost this, they get it back.

After I thought (shoot) that cashier is just going to pocket it. Oh well, it still was a lesson for my kids not to keep what does not belong to you. I’ll let the cashier worry about their soul!

I’ve found lots of items in parking lot carriages too! I trudge back into the store with them and ask that they do the same thing. I probably will never change! But, if I found a huge amount of money or jewelry, I might just call the local police and as you did - place some adds. I don’t think I’d turn it in to the police and I’d definitely not spend it.

“..They are not among us to protect us, protect our assets, or our rights..”

NOLA police actions post Katrina come to mind.
They STILL have not return guns they confiscated from the HOMES of law-abiding citizens. I also recall reading of THEIR daily harrassment of the home-owners in the Garden District who chose to stay behind to protect their neighborhood and who were self-sufficient with generators and plenty of food, not asking the police or government for ANYTHING.

I know there are PLENTY of good cops in this country, but there are also some scoundrels on EVERY police force.

So, beware.

The latest developments in the case: The police have now announced that, despite this alleged city policy (which no one seems to be able to find) about keeping the money, they’re now going to follow the state law, which requires them to perform certain steps to locate the owner and, if no owner is forthcoming, to give the money to the finder. And an anonymous person in Ft. Worth has given the family $4000, and more seems to be coming in from the general public.
