“Apple appears to have set itself up so that it's the one who decides who the casualties will be. (And it certainly won't be them, if they have anything to do with it.) “

I've been using Apple products for almost 20 years, and stuck with them when they were barely surviving. Having said that, I don't own an iPad, and I find things like what this article is addressing to be very disturbing. It used to be that when you bought a new Apple laptop they included the adapter for plugging into an LCD projector, for instance. Now, they routinely require you to buy that separately. Plus, they tend to change the adapter plug in for each new laptop, thus guaranteeing that you can't use the old one that you have and have to fork out more for a new one.

Eventually someone will come up with an equivalent, or better ‘ease of use’ platform and break the stranglehold they have on this type of operating system.

The new season of South Park did address this. Grossly, but it got the point across about just how extreme their control is.

A major game industry guru famously asked a roomful of developers, including hardcore Android fans, whether they had bought more than $20 of Android apps. No hands. He left his answer to “will you develop games for Android?” at that.

Maybe.

However, apparently you can’t make money at Apple either, so it’s a wash either way.

If my non-Apple tablet does what I want, I’ll be happy.

99.9 percent of all apps suck, so it’s not as though I’ll be missing anything at any rate.

Good point. When people expect free software...they won’t pay for it anymore.

But I guess that’s why google is doing good...they found out how to track what you do and sell it.

Plus buying apps on android was risky business in the past. They aren’t exactly forward/backward compatible. So if you upgrade your phone to the latest OS...your apps may/probably won’t work.

I see you post that big old thing all the time on your own threads, and I think that’s OK. Do you post that on all technical threads the have the word “Apple” in them too? Why do you care if Bob’s thread breaks out into fights?

Apple has passed better than $2 BILLION to the developers from the App store... that's MONEY with a capitol B. Apple only keeps 30% not the lion's share like most other retailers/jobbers/middle men in the distribution chain of getting a product to market. Apple handles marketing as well. The problem here is shaking out the issues of a different model with books, magazines, and upgrades of in App purchase models. It is most likely going to have to change to accommodate the differences of the markets. That is why the model can't work for books being sold in App or redirected market place. I think Apple will address this issue. iFlowreader has just been impatient about the issue. Apple DOES NOT WANT the attention of the FTC for monopolistic practices to rear it's ugly head.

It's not MY POLICY, it's Jim Robinson's policy. JIM cares that the threads don't break out into fights. Jim and I agreed that I would remind people to keep it civil.

I post "that big old thing" when I PING the 520 members of the Apple/Mac/iOS ping list to something that will interest them. . . reminding the members NOT GET INTO arguments with those who come into the thread for the sole purpose of disruption as part of that effort to keep it civil.

I don’t think you can cover up the pile of stink Apple left behind on this one. You’re going to need a bigger shovel.

A lot of folks post graphics with their ping lists, and I like the apple logo. But I think people who believe they have to announce Jim’s policy every time they do a ping are being childish. We all know the rules here, and I find it a bit condescending on your part. Especially when you’re not even the OP.

Unless you are expecting the very folks YOU pinged to be the flamers. I’d hate to be on your ping list, knowing you have such a low opinion of the 500 PLUS that are on it. That’s a shame because you always post good threads.

All that means to me is that, if Google is at a disadvantage at paying the developer’s, it needs to redefine itd business model, which it will.

Does it mean that I would buy an Ipad?

Not if it was the only tablet on Earth.

Apple makes mistakes. They fix them. This has a pile of unintended consequences. I think that Apple will fix them. They usually do not screw-up their partners unnecessarily. I think they did not foresee this consequence and are probably working on a fix. Combine their usual reticence to speak before they are ready to release the fix, and you have this mess.

I don’t really like the Kobo reader I purchased at Borders. An iPad2 was a possibility. After seeing how unethically you were treated by Apple,
I will never be a customer nor a developer of products for their
platform. I have an Android based phone right now. The Samsung
Galaxy Tab with 10.1 inch display and Android 3.01 is better hardware
than the iPad2. That might be my upgrade path from the Kobo. Sorry
for your losses at Apple’s hands.

I am doing what Jim and I agreed I would do. I dropped the warning several months ago and the threads started to devolve into flame wars within a few weeks, so I started using the warning again. The proof was in the results. Newbies think that Apple tech threads are fair game... It is NOT the members of the list I worry about... it's the others I am really reminding. Jim does not want to be bothered with coming in and having to clean up after them again.

If you think I could drop the warning, I am willing... but I've tried it twice before and both times the incivility started up within a very short time. I wish I could. I'd rather just ping the list.

I’ll bet a couple of publicity hungry Senators would love to demagogue
Apple and call for an FTC investigation. It won’t help Bob, but it would
be a lovely case of schadenfreude to watch it play out.

All that means to me is that, if Google is at a disadvantage at paying the developer’s, it needs to redefine itd business model, which it will.

Google copied Apple's 30% model... the problem is that Android users simply DO NOT BUY apps... they use the free one's and ignore the pay apps. According to those who track such things, the revenue of Android Market is only 10% of the of Apple App Store, despite the Android market share supposedly being larger than Apple's. (it isn't when you take into account all the iOS devices, but it is about the same size, but certainly not ten times smaller!).

So far, Google has not been able to figure out how to monetize the Apps for the developers... not even with advertising revenues for those who use advertising to support their apps. $2 Billion for the developers from Apple to less than $200 million from Google is quite a disparity and the developers are quite aware where they can and can not make money. They WILL follow the money.

There are now just over 100 dedicated apps for Android tablets... and over 100,000 apps dedicated to just the iPad... and that is evidence that they ARE following the money.

I don’t believe for one minute they didn’t know what the consequences were going to be.
