As if it isn't hard enough to get to sleep on overnight journeys, one group of unlucky passengers shared a carriage with a woman who talked loudly on her mobile phone for 16 hours. In the end she was arrested.
Lakeysha Beard of Tigard, Oregon, was charged with disorderly conduct after police were called by Amtrak staff following continued complaints from passengers.
Police said the 39-year-old became aggressive and was involved in a 'verbal altercation' when asked to be quiet during the journey from Oakland, California to Salem, Oregon.
Fellow travellers said Ms Beard refused to put the phone down even after staff made repeated announcements for passengers to not use mobile phones.
Ms Beard told Portland's KATU News that she felt 'disrespected' by the incident.
The train pulled out of the station in Oakland at 10pm on Saturday night and came to a halt at a crossing about two miles from Salem station at 2pm on Sunday
The train was stopped for about 20 minutes before it continued on to Portland.

Trains have regular 110v outlets. She probably just kept the phone charger plugged in.

That’s what I’d like to know. If I talk to Texas for an hour my phone is dead.
I’d like to know how you go from Oakland California to Salem Oregon in 10 hours by car. It used to take me 10 hours to drive to Salem from Sacramento. Plus, have you seen I-5 south of Sacto lately? It is one giant pothole after another as far south as Monterey(Sep 2010).

Was she black? Seems that’s the buzz word for black racists to pull out of their asses when they have no legitimate complaint.

We used to ride Amtrak in California for sightseeing. There are electrical outlets in many/most of the rows.
That is why I wont ride trains on the east coast.
Loud, rude and disgusting. And a white person risks a beatdown if they dare to voice their disapproval.
And I dont care if it sounds racist.

On a more serious note...it’s fine that this selfish brat of a woman was arrested, but you know, it shouldn’t have taken 16 hours for something to have been done. No cell phones in the “quiet car” means NO FRICKIN’ CELL PHONES IN THE QUIET CAR.
Have the railcar staff give ‘em one warning, and then route the train to the nearest stop to meet Officer (not so) Friendly if they refuse to abide by whatever rule is being violated. Throw in a nice, hefty $200 fine for the offense, too.
OTOH, it might have just been easier to upgrade this woman to the Ho-Ho and Twinkie car. I figure that would have shut her cakehole for a while, too.
