You are given a free pass right up until you get the nomination.

Sarah Palin had no “controversy” attached to her name prior to being named VP candidate. McCain was adored by the media. Once a threat to the Dem, the attacks happen.

Only Reagan and Palin have been a real target. That is because they both actually wanted to shrink government and not just talk about it.
Special, deep hatred is reserved for those who might actually change things.
Many on the left and the right love big government; it's just whose pet projects are funded.
Reagan and Palin are/were conservatives and say thanks but no thanks to the nanny state.
