NATO: Can the Europeans Defend Themselves? Alliance of the Unwilling
NYTimes ^ | June 15 2011 | Josef Joffe

The irony couldn’t be thicker. Here are 500 million inhabitants of the European Union with a gross domestic product that is the world’s largest. Yet the U.S., dragged along by Little Napoleon, a k a Nicholas Sarkozy, flies most of the sorties -- not to speak of providing all the World War IV stuff like space-based surveillance the Europeans can’t field themselves.

So Europe doesn’t want to put in its money where its mouth is, and Germany hasn’t even opened it. Unlike neutral Sweden, Europe’s No. 1 power has strictly refused to go along, mumbling that “force never solves political problems.” Unsustainable force certainly never does.

I couldn’t care less.

I want our troops home and to have our country knock off the overseas adventuring. As a country we have to secure our borders, profile and remove threats to our country, rebuild our infrastructure and our country’s defenses and secure our own energy oil and natural gas. And to remove the UN from our shores. We need to be open to trade, encourage immigration of talented and educated people with monies, and end most all regulation.

Watch us grow and prosper if these things are in place. We would be able to pay off all our debt in record time and provide prosperity for our own and others.

But of course this would be the course of free people.

Our elites do not want free people, they are looking for slavery.

No they won't. They want us gone so they can pursue their twisted ambitions unfettered by our presence and (dare I say) "interference". Our presence there is one of the things preventing the tyranny that's already in place from maturing (how is it that the USA stands by and allows them to set up a government that's based on the Soviet Union's government, to rule all of the 27 nations in the EU save one, that one being Germany? and to allow them to pass laws that take away basic rights such as habeas corpus, and work towards re-establishing "Code Napoleon"?) Meanwhile, we have a president who praises their completely undemocratic government by calling them "history's most successful democratization strategy" . . . ?? The ignorance of what the European Union is is just too profound; just because they are using "soft power" like Red China does for the most part doesn't make them innocuous.

We'll certainly miss us when we're gone (just like those that are wise among us "miss us" already in the Panama Canal), but they will not.

Can Europe defend themselves against who? Themselves?
Who would want Europe?
Be like trying to conquer and rule Harlem. Just NOT going to happen.

We are in decline.

Sweden was a world power for a while after the 30 years war, and now they are a footnote. Great Britain controlled more land than any other empire in history, and now they are a bankrupt rock in the Atlantic.

We are heading for the same. If the US stays together, which it might not.

We never should have permitted the European allies to make us into their war machine while they took a detour down radical socialist lane.

Now we are stuck with weak allies and socialists dominating global politics just as we become too broke to carry their duty of self defense for them. In addition, our international elite have joined the dominant European socialist aims. European socialism is the rule of royality by another means. America gets to fight and die for the aims and desires of American and European globalists who hate Americans and American freedom.

Very defeatist post. There is a reason why there's a decline, you know.

Yes there is a reason. We choose to be.
We choose to send our industry overseas, not have kids, and import large amounts of illegal foreign labor. We choose to buy cheap imports because that is easier than actually making it ourselves (and having to deal with the factory and its waste).
We choose to celebrate thuggery, why mocking real achievement.

Why do we choose this? Because we got soft. People think the riches we were born with are owed us, not earned. Most people today have no concept of working hard and saving.

Nations have life cycles. Study history. I am not saying we are going the way of the Western Roman Empire, but we are in decline. We don’t have the will or the economic power to do what we did 40 years ago. We don’t even have the will to have a space program of note.
