Web help needed
6/22/11

Posted on 06/22/2011 7:51:10 AM PDT by pabianice

Help, please. Can someone direct me to information on how to create and manage a website that allows people to log on and enter public comments? (like FR but much smaller).

Thanks.

Why don’t you just open a Facebook account?
You post a subject and people comment.

What technology do you want to use?

You will at least need a database and some sort of application server, whether 2-tier or 3-tier. You could do it with LAMP, or J2EE, or the dreaded ASP. Or you could just buy a customizable package and install and configure it.

But all of this assumes some sort of technical knowledge.

Just go to GoDaddy.

They can set up so you can share document, Collaborate and FTP.

The product you want is “Website Tonight”.

‘Bout a $100 per year.

I’m a real non-techie so I don’t know if this is the best thing, but Vistaprint (or an associate, it’s on their website) has a service where “anyone can easily” create a website, they have the server and it’s supposedly simple to follow their instructions to create your own website without having to know all this technical stuff.

Maybe just look at it for comparison’s sake with other options. Or maybe someone here on FR will verify if it’s good or not.

Myself, I have been online since ‘97 with a whole buncha free messageboards, bulletin boards, forums, websites, blogs, call ‘em what ya will.
Have always attempted to encourage others to do the same.Few, if any, have done so.

I still dunno beans bout the technical end of things; I can do minor html, pics, linx, etc. WYSIWYG is fine with me.

My first years many of the boards I had either went belly up or became successful and startred charging for their sh!tty “services.”
I started out doing strictly USMC History and Tradition; but now poly-tiks has permeated all aspects of daily life, and I don’t dig this commie crap, so...

The last few years, things have gotten considerably better!

I have had my first sites on Angelfire from the start, followed by Network54, and now wordpress which is No.2 behind Blogger now.

Myself, Iwouldn’t consider going any other way now.

Another option is Google Apps: http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html

Register a domain through GoDaddy or some other registrar (approx. 10 bucks per year), then link your domain with Google Apps. You can have 10 free email accounts, lots of web sites which can be linked to Google Docs, PicasaWeb albums, etc. You can have a web site running in just a few hours, all free. I had several web sites running on a server at home, but am now converting everything to Google Apps. No more worries about power, bandwidth, backup, etc. Did I mention it was free? Here’s an example site I set up for my wife’s sewing group, took about 2 hours to set up: http://flyingneedles.org
