Alternatives to Cable? (OT)
Me

Posted on 06/22/2011 10:32:28 PM PDT by MacMattico

Ok, So we've got Time Warner Cable, no pay channels, and Road Runner High speed Internet.

I'm sick of paying $140 a month!!!

What are some good alternatives people are using? We need high speed Internet for business purposes. As for the TV, we like Fox News, ESPN, local channels, Disney, Nickolodean, A&E, HG, History, Discover, and YES. (Yankees). Does any such system exist at a more reasonable price? That you can use a DVR or like devise?

I'm willing to entertain "just stream from a computer" or whatever it is as long as it's reasonably user friendly and the picture is clear. Otherwise, it's $140 bucks a month for me.

Whatever you do, don’t get AT&T Internet. Unless you like your internet to be down half the time.

Will a signal booster do any good if you dont have line of sight? I live near mountains and the tower is partially blocked from getting TV channels on free TV.

Pinging the HDTV list..

Freeper help needed - alternatives to $140/mth cable ..

HDTV pings!

Interested in the HDTV ping list?
Please Freepmail me(freepmail works best)if you would like your name added to the HDTV ping list,(approximately 375 freepers are currently on the HDTV ping list).
The pinged subjects can be HDTV technology, satellite, cable, and OTA HD reception (Over The Air with roof top or indoor antennas), Broadcast specials, Sports, Blu Ray/HDDVD, and any and all subjects relating to HDTV.

LVD

Note: if you search Freerepublic using the keyword "“HDTV”, you will find most of the past HDTV postings.

I have ATT DSL in a package with my static IP and home phone. It runs me $112 a month. The ATT DSL package alone is $65 I think.

I am rural Louisiana and at this time ATT is my only internet option. In fact the only reason I even have it at all is because ATT cold called me and offered me service and only after they charged my CC did they realize that they did NOT have service in my area.

Two quick calls to the BBB and ATT ran me a line. That was a few years ago and this area has grown some but still no cable option.

Netflix streaming on the Wii and Xbox for 8 bucks a month.
Antenna for regular HD channels.
If you’re looking for a good alternative to a landline I use the Obi110 in conjunction with Google Voice to make free calls...at least until the end of the year.

It is so annoying when it drops for 30-45 minutes for no reason randomly in the day. And if you call support they run a useless line test, tell you it must be your modem, and then transfer you to a 3rd party rip-off I.T. service.

Step #1: Rent a backhoe.

Step #2: Dig a big hole.

Step #3: Dump your television in the bottom of it.

Step #4: Backfill hole.

Or, more simply, just give it to somebody you don’t like.

I live in a valley in the mountains over 30 miles from the broadcast antennas and get good reception with a $40 antenna.

Only 3 stations though, but that’s all there are out here.

"...that all history now is written by Postmodernists (read that atheist/marxist/progressives)."

Might I suggest you look into Paul Johnson's many books. He does NOT fit into the above category.

I have read some of his books. Yes, he is one of the good guys....They are there—They are just vastly outnumbered by the disinformation which is promoted by the NYT and all major media and most Foundations.

We gave up cable 3 months ago....haven’t missed it. We do have Sirius/XM radio so can listen to FOX, sports, cnbc, a lot of music, etc. Signed up for Netflix (2 movies a month, woohoo)...spend more time reading, on internet...and actually are preparing to use the HD tv we have for downloaded from the computer (have had to buy a couple computers, so making sure they are capable has been important.) But, remember, we have no children at home....but, then again...not having cable with kids at home is much better....IF you can entertain them otherwise.

Did a search on that and boy the reviews are horrid for that triple play.

There are only three real options in my area - Comcast [Xfinity], Verizon [FIOS], and various satellite providers.

Since I need GREAT Internet speed for work, I am left with Comcast and Verizon as my choices. Max satellite Internet tops out at about 6 Mbps ...

Between Comcast and Verizon, both triple-play packages are about the same in price. HOWEVER, I ALSO need RELIABLE phone service for my business - and this is where Comcast falls down.

Comcast was never a phone company, whereas Verizon has OVER 100 years of experience [and infrastructure]. Comcast has to hand-off its local telephone service to Verizon's network [in my area] when a call is completed to a non-Comcast customer. So, it has no control of the end-to-end local call.

Same for long-distance, Comcast has to hand-off to a long-distance provider, who then hands-off to the local provider on the other end. Verizon doesn't have to hand-off long distance, since it uses its [formerly MCI] long-distance network and it has a local presence in about 30 states. So, it can complete many more calls [both local and long-distance] through its own network AND has control of those calls.

The people who complain about Verizon FIOS are whiners - sure, there are a few problems now and then, but MUCH less than Comcast ...

Surely the Baraqqis will come up with some kind of internet stamps to go with food stamps and poverty cell phones.

Hang in there til 2012 - ti’s gotta happen.

I have a sattelite office/apt in another town. I canceled Comcast internet, doing my part to save myself in the Obama economy.

I have an old large screen Non-HdTv set there. Anyone have ideas on whether I can still get an indoor antenna and converter box to get local programming TV instead of cable or dish?

I have Netflix but miss the noise of local Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS broadcast channels for news and nighttime programming when I am away from home.
