M4 refurbishment
vanity | 06/26/2011 | vanity

Posted on 06/26/2011 4:05:04 PM PDT by maine yankee

I need a little research help.

I am looking for info about companies that ‘rehab’ or refurbish small weapons for the military. Most interested in rehab of Colt M4 and Bushmaster M4.

Large scale projects under contracts

Who’s doing it. What specs. Costs or bids per unit.

Assume I know nothing about weapons or refurbishing.

Thank you all in advance.

You'll stand a better chance of getting an answer if you you use the BangList keyword. I just took care of that.

In military we kept upper an lower an bolt carrier an just recoated upper an lower then everything else was replaced new.....

Just some thoughts.

You have former DOD armorers in your company or circle of friends Brownells has the tools needed to accomplish such in house.

There are gunsmiths that can do it but if you want to make sure its done properly send it to Bushmaster. I’m assuming you have a Bushmaster M-4.

Unknown for that amount ... Check with FN aka Fabrique Nationals USA rep.... May be yer best bet. But most of those companies may try an do a swap for your old units for new...

How do you get 10,000 machine guns and know anything about guns? How do you get the license and permits to deal with such large amounts of machine guns when CMP won't release a semi-auto M14? Things do not add up here?

Hubby works with a guy who refurbed a deuce and a half. He says it’s a great way to weed out the ladies after the first couple of dates.

Put the right people together with the right skills.

Put the right package with the right funding.

It’s called capitalism.

It used to be the American way of doing business.

There are already guys up north who do that stuff big time.

They even tell their customers they can fly them in. Their runway can handle ‘C-5’s. Via trains or trucks are an option too.

Anybody can do just one.

I was one of the civilian ordnance techs hired to rework Marine Corps M16A1 rifles into M16A2s as the JSSAP Program of the late 1970s-early '80s began to take off. We not only rebuilt small arms from all the services for the using service, but in some instances those turned in by one service [Navy and Marines] were rebuilt for the use of another [USAF]. Also, reworks for some foreign governments and NGOs [the Contras, among others] were also done, as well as some small arms developmental engineering. We also did initial acceptance inspections on newly manufactured small arms [Navy Mossberg 500 shotguns and Ruger Security-Six .38 revolvers for DOD police and military installation gate guards] which sometime cost less for a new unit than a rebuild of an older system that had seen long service and for which parts were sometimes difficult or impossible to obtain. We worked on everything from .22 conversion units for M1911A1 .45 autopistols [training guns for Naval Academy cadets at Annapolis] to 20mm cannon for El Salvadorian Navy/Coastal Patrol small boats.

Yeah, they're still at it. Life in the sandboxes of Iraq and Afghanistan is as hard on the weapons as it is on the guys and girls. But small arms maintenance and repair is not where the big bucks is. I

When I first saw the headline, I was thinking you wanted to do this:

I've done that, and on Shermans, too. But we also pulled the old mogas radial engine, and replaced it with a 500 HP Ford GAF out of a Pershing. It's easier when you have a 200-ton overhead crane to pull the gun mantlet rather than playing around with a cherrypicker truck- but a VTR will do a fine job on pulling the engine/transmission powerpack.

Worked on most everything with tracks up to the Abrams, as well, including a proposal to put Cummings Diesels into ten Spanish Army Tigers in the 1970s, now out of service.

I bet the paper work makes it almost not worth it. It is a hassle to sell machine guns to the public. Is it still $200 for the stamp?
