PEARLINGTON, Miss. -- The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has posted a reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for shooting a bald eagle during the last week of March, possibly the 25th -27th) in Pearlington, Miss., about 40 miles northeast of New Orleans.

The shooting may have occurred while the eagle was perched in a tree. Passersby found the wounded eagle and took it to the Pet Haven Veterinary Hospital for surgery. If the eagle recovers, it will be released back into the wild.

Shooting an eagle is a violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act allows for a reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to a conviction.

Any information on this incident should be provided to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent Ben Bryant at (985) 882-3756, or the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks at 1-800-Be-Smart.

Good grief. First it’s falcons and now an eagle. Same solution for illegal and senseless shooting as with the falcons, an eye for an eye.

So you’re suggesting we kill a falcon for every eagle killed?

My gosh, I lived my first 11 years in Pearlington, MS. The total population now is only 1,700. I think the perp can be easily found! I don't remember the population in Pearlington when I lived there but I do know, we had no TV service or telephones, no movie theaters, restaurants or social activities outside of Sunday mass. We had a dry goods store, a small grocery (where I would get my cold grapette), 1 Catholic church, 1 Black Baptist Church, a post office/fabric shop, a beauty pallor/home/only telephone operator, and a one pump gas station. That was Pearlington. If nothing else this gave me an opportunity to transport to the early 50s - my favorite years.

So one more eagle has to die?

Surely you aren’t suggesting we kill people who shoot birds.

What’s all the fuss about? Maybe the guy was just hungry for something that tasted like spotted owl.

Couple of months ago my family went camping at Kissimmee River State Park and saw 13 Bald Eagles in three days while cruising around in our boat.
WOW.

Three weeks ago there was a bald eagle shot near Burnsville, Mississippi. Two in less than a month.

When they catch the shooter... he or she or they will go away for a very long time.

Wow!! Grapette! My favorite flavored pop!! Remember the pop machines with triangular opener? You put the can in and pushed down on the lever to open your pop much like a bottle opener.

LOL - quite humorous. Not the killing of these birds, of course. Just wanted to verify that fact.

Can? Cans? You little youngster. I'm talking small 8 oz bottles. In Pearlington we only had the small bottles. Of course, in those days, we were far behind our big Neighbors in New Orleans and maybe they had the cans and can openers. But, I do remember the large box drink machines with the lines of soda in them:). Although, I do remember the beer cans had to be opened with a triangular opener which I still have from my parents day and I am sure still exist. Gosh, the kids today only know zip tops:)
