Landlords use dog-poop DNA tests to track down owners
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 6/28/11 | Amelia Glynn

I recently did the whole mixed-breed dog DNA testing shebang on Alice, using three of the most popular tests available: Wisdom Panel, BioPet and Canine Heritage. And while her results were, um...mixed, it was definitely a fun and interesting process. (More on this experience in a post next week.)

Like me, most people test their mixed-breed dogs simply out of curiosity. Many mutts come from shelters and rescue groups where, although workers and volunteers do their best, a lot of background information isn't often available at the time of adoption. DNA tests can often shed light on our dog's ancestors, and thus, provide insight into behavioral traits, nutritional and exercise needs and potential health issues.

But now, some fed up landlords and property managers are using DNA tests to link dogs — and by association, their people — to "unclaimed" poop in the neighborhood.

Is this not the very definition of neurotic behavior? It has to be expensive as hell. And do they maintain a poop database to compare against?

The only thing nuttier than this were all the comments saying what a great idea it is!

What in the world did we do before we became so concerned about dogs dumping in our yards? We went about our business and mowed over it, and life went on. Sheese!

As a bonifide slumlord, I think this is the stupidest thing I ever heard of. Keeping the properties maintained and chasing down dead beats keeps me quite busy. Doing CSI stuff on dog sh!t is not worth my time, no matter what.

Wouldn’t cameras be less expensive and an attractive security feature for the tenant and the landlord?

Actually, this is about time! lol

I’ve seriously thought about this for years, along with testing the DNA on cigarette butts that jerk smokers throw on the grounds.

Smoking is no problem, just quit littering. Smokers are their own worse enemy. My wife smokes and she would never litter with her butts.

Property rights in an apartment setting are for the owners and their rules, in the legal contract called a lease, spell them out.

We have areas for people to take their dogs and they have to pick up. Just like NYC.

The same applies to the fact we aren’t supposed to bring glass to the pool/hot tub area. So when I see folks living here bring beer bottles to the pool I say something. If they disagree, yes, I “rat” on them. Because their actions will result in MY lack of access to the same community pool because broken glass can require the area being shut down for cleaning lest management get sued if some kid cuts themselves.

It isn’t like they don’t have signs all over the place. I have no problem enforcing a contract from either side with technology.

Conservatives understand basic rules and contracts, it’s not like it’s left wing to expect some jerk leasee to clean up after their pet. The complaints about being busted usually come, surprise, from left wing a-holes.

The same jerks that expect me to become a sheep with Obamacare, Soc Sec, Medicare, etc. (or force me to stop using certain light bulbs) are always the whiners when it comes to rules.

Hypocrite little f***ks that shoulb be seriously challenged and messed with.

I get in their faces.

When we walk our dogs, we carry those little bags to collect their “droppings” so as to not create a problem for our neighbors. Unfortunately, as evidenced from my front yard, not everyone does this. However, I can’t see employing the time and expense to try and track down the offender.
