Very poor choice of words, considering happy event usually refers to the birth of a child!Let's not forget that the original remarks were probably in French. At worst, it's probably a literal translation. The French and Monagasques don't have the same little figures of speech about having babies that we do.

Good point! They probably don’t say “we have a bun in the oven” either...one of the more crude Americanisms when one is “in a family way” (to use a nicer expression)!
