My parents grew up in the Deep South, and loved okra, but they could never get us kids to touch it. I actually tossed my whole dinner once, because my dad insisted that I eat a full helping.

That said, a friend finally got me to try some fried okra a few years back, and to my amazement, I loved it. Can't get enough of that stuff when Mommy makes a batch.
