—Baseball is a collection of me, myself and I. When Cabrera is in the batter’s box, HE’s the only one with a bat in his hand. When there’s a hard ground ball to him, HE’s the one who must field it. No matter who you put around him, HE must still do his job. Nobody else can help him, no matter how altruistic, no matter how politically-connected, no matter how willing they are to get their way by force or changing of rules to the expediency of the moment.
He only gets his chance while he remains better at his job than other options. When that is no longer the case, he’s out of a job. Meritocracy in action.
