China could HAVE dealt with this, but they're already past the hump, with their median age of 40 and one or nearly two generations havign grown up as only children. They can't change the inevitable now, they can only stall or move it slightly.

you are right to separate out the various countries in AFrica. If I am not mistaken, AC is from one of the most stable — Tanzania. That country, along with Kenya has a very bright future. Other countries — it varies..

Oh dear! How did an interesting article about a very long train journey turn into an economic debate about the future of China, India and Africa?
I guess too many smart people. (I take the blame).
Yes. They do so just as frequently in both India and China as they do in Africa. However India and China don’t experience famines everytime there is a drought. Besides the famine in East Africa have a lot to do with the political situation in Somalia and South Sudan.
