The Neanderthal was an advbanced ape and his dna was halfway between ours and that of a chimpanzee.Check the copyright date of your reference material. You would be well served to try to find something newer than 1850 on which to base your opinions.

Reconstructions as per the image show the neanderthal having the same sort of rounded torso which apes have rather than the elongated human torso. The Neanderthal was an advanced ape.
