Agreed. And when society fails, it’s up to the women to keep themselves safe.

A big “YOU GO, GIRL!!!!!” to the clerk in this story.

Law abiding men should too. Hell, protection of themselves and family ring a bell? Don’t abdicate your responsibility.

Anyone who has a disparity of force against them should.

Being alone. You can use a higher level of force against several people ganging up on you.

Being older. Younger people are stronger in general and you can use a higher level of force because you’re at a disadvantage.

Being legally blind if you lose your glasses. Someone attempting to punch your face can render you unable to defend yourself if you have terrible vision, and a deliberate attack to take away your vision could allow you to use a higher level of force against them.

Significant weight difference between you (lighter) than the attacker - no not an obese fat guy going for the last slice at sbarro. Disparity of force exists, all things equal. You can use a higher level of force than your attacker.

Lesser weapon (but could be lethal) - like a baseball bat - could escalate you to draw your firearm if they are coming after you with a tire iron, crowbar, baseball bat, anything that can render you unconscious and unable to defend yourself. Even screwdrivers - which are used to kill people more often than knives by burglars.

Look at this surly pig of a man, staring cooly into the camera.

I warrant he’s staring into the gates of Hell, now. So I say,

Burn in Hell, you worthless b@stard!

My wife weighs barely a hundred pounds also. She carries a pistol. She hasn’t had to shoot anyone, but handguns have got her out of two bad situations with similar looking animals. She loves to practice and she has very good situational awareness. She acts with precision and without hesitation. She comes from a tough military family; I think she has a better chance of handling a dangerous situation well than most men.

“[but I may get a MinPin and a big handbag for “concealed carry”, some day]...LOL”

Yeah, but what if that means you’ll be facing a peeved doberman someday? :-)

“You were carrying WHAT for protection?”

(Resume normal breathing)

Of course, you’re right, but my angered interest is personal.

I’m a native of Columbia, South Carolina where this woman successfully defended her life and sent that evil b@stard straight to Hell. My beautiful first wife G-d rest her soul was from Orangeburg (the Lord called her home ten years ago this week). The lovely lady who was her mother passed away only months ago. Orangeburg has many decent people in it both black and white. That this worthless goblin is said to be from the same city only points out that the local paper the Times & Democrat has a murder story above the fold far more often than not. It’s a dangerous city and I was always concerned for their safety. Even now when I drive to the house in Orangeburg to mow the lawn I’m packing. Which is much easier here in South Carolina than in many other states. And we have a Castle Doctrine that has the ACLU and the Southern poverty Law Center in a continous tizzy.

Thank G-d this story had a happy outcome. Prayers for the peace of mind of the woman who did what she had to do.

Wow.

Sorry to hear you live is such a dangerous place.

I’m lucky to live out here in Hillbilly Heaven.

I only have two areas in the town I must shop in where I have to be “paranoid”.

Both areas involve housing paid for by Uncle Sam.

Unfortunately, due to mortgage defaults, one of those areas is the [former] McMansion housing complex, turned Section 8 behind the WalMart strip mall and there are several other stores I frequent there.

The ‘local yutes’ enjoy taunting decent people and because of WalMart’s stinginess, their bizarrely arranged parking lot leaves 80% of it in darkness.

Women have been grabbed and thrown into vans, driven to deserted places and raped.

I am not going to ever be one of them.

If somebody grabs me, one of us is going to die and I don’t intend to be the one, no matter what I have to do.

I may not be allowed to carry a gun in this freak state...but a woman’s purse can hold a LOT of other stuff.

I WILL survive unscathed or die trying.

If I were her, my “peace of mind” would be just fine and dandy.

Hopefully, she feels the same way.

You be careful, now.

God [and Samuel Colt] be with you.

A friend of mine has a brother who lost his lower leg to a .22LR. It can do a lot more damage than most people realize.

"This spring, he got *really* torqued over what I thought seemed a harmless looking elderly tall guy [that I really hadn’t noticed until the dog got ‘righteous’ about him coming up behind us] and I fussed at him for it and apologized to the old man for the dog’s ‘bad manners’."

Gal, you know dogs better than I do, I know you do. You should give that pup a pound of bacon ;) I trust my dog, she's old and fat but when her ears stand straight up and she gets aggressive at somebody, she senses something I may have missed. Normally, she lays her ears back and prances around, can hardly stand still trying to get somebody to pat her. If she growls, I take notice. Plus, she finds my turtles when they get out, so I guess I'll go cook her some bacon now.

Stay safe. And lammyno if you ever find a copy of that 'grass song you told me about, hehe.

I have the “societal prejudices” to deal with, him being a really big Euro Dobe.

He needs to be a calm, stable, well behaved citizen as well as my “body guard”.

When that happened, he was only about 18 months old and still very much a mental “puppy” who is still learning what’s acceptable and what’s not.
He was also just entering puberty which is the time when a male Dobe can become -extremely- over-possessive of its female owner, perhaps to the point of irrational hostility towards men.

I do not want him to *ever* be a bad ambassador of his breed since they’ve already got gobs of “baggage”, anyway.

When that happened, we had taken him to visit our doctor on the day we had an appointment, anyway.

I won’t leave him in the truck alone so hubby went in for his check up while I was behind the office working on Odin’s obedience stuff.

We were just going around the lot working on his “hip” command which is where he keeps his neck against my leg and his head across my hips at all times to “steady” me if I have a balance problem spring up.

Of his own volition, he also uses that position to “block” people from coming close to me if he perceives a problem.

I was minding the dog and the guy got really close to us without me noticing and I thought Odin was just doing *really* well with the “hip” thing, to the point of going overboard and ‘herding’ me to the right, constantly.

Turns out he’d seen the man coming from who knows how far away and was blocking me to the point of actually shoving me back towards our truck and the doc’s office back door.

As I said, he’s still just a kid and I had no idea he’d developed such a strong protective drive all on his own.

By the time I felt the growl against my hip, the old guy was only about 5 feet away and *not* moving away or around to avoid the dog, at all.

I should’ve picked up on that right away but I was so focused on the dog ‘acting civil’ I ignored Odin’s *obvious* mistrust of the guy.

When I stopped, Odin started the not-very-loud but deadly serious snarl/growl thing he does.

I told the dog to sit and said “friend” several times which is his cue to be sociable but Odin was -not- obeying and not buying any of that.
[for all I know, he was thinking what a brain-dead, oblivious idiot he had for an owner]

That’s when I told the guy I was sorry he was acting that way and the guy said, with sort of a creepy, cold smile “He doesn’t like me very much, does he?”

Odin ~really~ ratcheted it up then and I had to hold him back from lunging.

Then, and only then did the guy go away.

In retrospect, I shudder to think what kind of bullet I may have just barely dodged.

There are a lot of Dobes who are all sound and fury, signifying nothing and I have to wonder if the guy was banking on that.

That parking lot was in a really small WV town, surrounded by literally hundreds of thousands of acres of mountainous *nothing*.

You could search forever and never find a body.

So, from then on, what society in general “thinks” of him comes second to what *he* thinks of some particular member of society.

[do you have runaway turtle stampedes very often?]...;D

Jeff is still supposedly looking for the recording.

I’ll stop by his place this weekend and light a fire under him.

:)

Yeah, I can’ even remember exactly how many I have known over the years who were felled by a .22 rimfire. One of my earliest memories is a kid who killed himself with one when he was about twelve years old, it was deliberate suicide too, not an accident.
