“Authorities piece together clues from flight logs over 9/11 threat”
From Susan Candiotti and Barbara Starr, CNN
September 10, 2011 11:20 a.m. EDT

SNIPPET: “New York (CNN) — Two of the three suspects believed to be involved in a potential 9/11 anniversary plot against New York or Washington are of Arab descent and traveled to the United States last week, according to a U.S. government official.

Authorities are operating under the assumption that two of the suspects have arrived on U.S. soil, and have been piecing together clues gleaned from flight logs and manifests, among other sources, said the official, who declined to be named.

A third plotter is believed to be have traveling in Europe, though it is not clear whether that person has arrived in the United States, the official said.

American spy networks had intercepted communications of an attack from an al Qaeda operative in Pakistan, derived from a source who has provided accurate information in the past, official say.”

SNIPPET: “Cops are searching for three stolen vehicles - two belonging to Tully Construction in Queens, which is doing roadwork on West St. near 1 World Trade Center, a police spokesman said.

On Sept. 1, a dark green Chevy van with a two-inch horizontal stripe and a yellow turret light was boosted from a construction site at the Westbound onramp of the Long Island Expressway at the Utopia Parkway. Police said the driver left the vehicle temporarily to talk to coworkers when it was stolen.

The next night at 9:30 p.m., three men broke into a construction locker at the Tully storage facility on Ditmars Blvd. and 94th St. near Utopia Parkway and loaded roughly $70,000 in tools and construction equipment into the stolen van and another vehicle, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said.

He cautioned that there are no concrete ties to the reported anniversary attack plot.

“This may very well be industrial savy thieves looking to steal expensive construction equipment, but it’s receiving greater scrutiny because of the threat environment,” Browne said.

A third van, a white Econoline stolen from Liberty Storage in Jersey City on August 20, is also being investigated for possible ties to the attack threat. Thieves disabled the burglar alarm, cut the phone lines and took surveillance tapes along with the vehicle.

“They made a considerable effort not to be detected,” Browne said, adding that it could be a simple vehicle theft.”

“DC Police: Suspicious activity tips up 60 percent”

Saturday - 9/10/2011, 12:01pm ET

By JESSICA GRESKO
Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) -

SNIPPET: “One U.S. official says al-Qaida dispatched three men, at least two of whom could be U.S. citizens, to detonate a car bomb or, failing that, cause as much destruction as possible.

But U.S. intelligence officials say they have no evidence there is anyone inside the United States tied to the plot.

James McJunkin, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s field office in Washington, said Saturday his office was actively following the threat and investigating leads they get.

“We vet these threats routinely,” he said.

He would not talk about reports that the threat involved two Americans or people traveling with American documents, but said that American involvement can change an investigation.”
