A golden retriever was definitely its owner's best friend early Tuesday morning when it scared off a man who was sexually assaulting its owner, Madison police reported.

****

"The dog knew its owner was in trouble and came growling, barking and gnashing its teeth," DeSpain said. "The attacker fled."

I had a calico who arched her back and growled at a guy who came to pick me up for a date once.

Our date didn’t generate any sparks and I never dated him again. Just as well....my kitty probably knew something I didn’t. ;-)

Who walks their dog in a dog park at 1AM?

Well, *I* do quite often, since it's: quiet, close to home, there are few others around, and it's a good way to wind down after work.

You *are* aware that not everyone works 9 to 5, right? Many folks work odd hours that can include getting off work at 11 or midnight or 3 am. Where I work we have 4 different shift lengths for the various jobs here, plus 5 different start times. It's not unusual to see a nurse walking out to her car at 0245hrs, or a cook pulling in a 0400.

Too bad it did not bite off the perp’s Anthony Weiner. That would have learned him a lesson!

My late MIL had a tiny Siamese cat, Loa. She loved to sit on top of the fridge, and one day she stumbled up there and fell right toward my MIL’s face. Her claws came out automatically, but she purposely retracted them before she hit Mom, and her face did not get scratched. Loa, all seven pounds of her, landed on her feet. She still kept sitting on top of the fridge, though.

Mom loved telling that story, and how amazed she was to see Loa retract her truly impressive claws just in time.

No offense meant. I am very aware that not everyone is a 9-5er.

Maybe I'm just a scaredy-cat. I would never consider going out to walk my dogs alone at 1AM - and we live in a quiet little town and I have my CCW .

My dogs are guardian angels in fur suits. A friend of mine heard noises outside his house one night. He peeked out his front door and saw a thug trying to steal lawn equipment from the back of his pickup truck. He opened the door wider and his black lab tore out after the guy. The last my friend saw of the stranger, he was running full bore down the street with the dog hot on his heels, and was trying to swat the dog from snapping at his rear while still running. That dog was definitely “open for business” and did not return for an hour!

I may have come off a little harsher than I meant to.

I live in a city of 300k, and have no qualms about walking about *most* neighbourhoods at night, but there are areas of town that I will avoid with or without a canine companion.

Having a dog with you also increases one’s confidence, which is a HUGE factor in what kind of aura/vibe you are putting out to others. Most thugs leave the confident folks alone, since folks who are already afraid are far easier to frighten/prey upon.

That said, I am always on the alert, as is the dog. I have to be much more aware now since I’m down to one small (25lb) dog, after saying g’bye to a couple of big bruisers (100 & 130 lbs). I won’t let idiots and thugs reduce my activity for any reason. Civilized behaviour WILL prevail!
