Jerry Lewis out as Muscular Dystrophy Association chairman

(CNN) -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association announced Wednesday that comedian Jerry Lewis is no longer serving as the organization's national chairman.

Lewis, 85, and MDA had announced in May that he was retiring as host of the MDA Labor Day Telethon in September. But he said then in a statement that he was planning to continue to serve as the organization's national chairman.

"As a labor of love, I've hosted the annual telethon since 1966," Lewis said in the news release issued in May by the association. "And I'll be making my final appearance on the show this year, by performing my signature song, 'You'll Never Walk Alone.'"

Jim Brown, vice president of public relations for the MDA, told CNN in a telephone interview that Lewis will not be replaced in his role as national chairman.

He also said that Lewis will not host this year's telethon, which is scheduled for September 4. Instead, it will be hosted by Nigel Lythgoe, Nancy O'Dell, Allison Sweeney and Jan Carl, Brown said.

So you figured that he did this for MD for over forty years because of that?

Possibly it started that way...Never can tell, if lawsuit was inevitable, he may have agreed to doing it, it caught on, helped his ‘career’ and now they have to ‘drive him out’.

Stranger things have happened..

Hell, maybe M Richards will do something for ‘Rainbow Coalition’ - (of course, at the urging of J Jackson to do a pro-bono so as not to get sued)

Jerry was good in “The Nutty Professor”. After that I think he was typecast. IMHO

Wow, that some pretty twisted logic, lawsuit? Really? Maybe your young and don't know anything about Lewis's career back in the 50's and 60's, but WTF difference does it make why he started to do it. AFIK, other that possibly good publicity he didn't personally profit off the MD organization. I never liked his comedy much but he raised a boat load of money for MD and devoted tons of time other than just for the telethon.

I believe Jerry quit smoking because somebody promised a huge donation if he quit, and he’s stuck to it for years, now if that isn’t dedication, I don’t know what is.

"Nigel Lythgoe, Nancy O'Dell, Allison Sweeney and Jan Carl....are these people employed at Denny's or something?"

The only people I know by those names worked for Border's till it went belly up. Their main jobs were to hide conservative books in the back of the boiler room.

I believe that originally Jerry Lewis went for this charity because he was accused of mocking the handicapped with his characters. So while I give him credit for the good work he has done, it’s not all golden and pure.

A candidate for the most vile and disgusting comment ever made on FR. What kind of person makes such a remark?

Hubby always loved Jerry Lewis growing up... he and his best buddy loved to mimic Jerry’s routines. When he met Mr. Lewis in the course of his work he found the man is nothing like his on-screen persona. Lewis is an egotistical, nasty, SOB.

My grandparents and I used to watch the show back in the 60’s when my parents were out having fun. Another childhood icon gone, though I haven’t watched it in YEARS. In fact, I didn’t even know Lewis was still hosting the event, kind of like Dick Clark’s Rocking New Year’s Eve. Painful. People have to know when to retire and pass the torch.

Reminds me a lot of certain congresscritters.

I will amend my comments that unlike congresscritters, Lewis asked for free will donations. Forgive me, big mistake.
