Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

Just trying to keep my lawn and trees alive. Gave up on the garden for now. Our forecast is a broken record. Highs at 105 - 107 for the rest of this week, and may drop to 103 by Tuesday.

Could you add me to the gardening list?
I have a tiny garden in FL. In the fall I plant Chinese Cabbage, Green Beans, Jalapeno and Ancho Peppers, Arugula and Lettuce.

During the torrid summer months I concentrate on tropical flowers, Plumeria, Athurium, Ixoria, Ruellia, Lantan, and Bougainvillia.

In the Spring I harvest Mangoes, Bananas and Avocados.

Every time I eat a mango or an avocado, I replant the seed, so I am getting a tropical JUNGLE in my itsy bitsy back yard.

Oh...I also have a baby lime tree and tiny Oranges.

Well, I had a disappointment today. I cut up one of my beautiful cucumbers for lunch and it is BITTER. The bitterness is mostly in the skin, but even the flesh carries some of it.

Any suggestions? Does anyone have a recipe to counter that? Like maybe soaking them in sugar and water (or Splenda, etc.) and serving them sliced, peeled and slathered in sour cream?

I’ve never encountered bitter cucumbers before. I don’t think I let them get too large. They are smaller than what I buy in the store, nice and fat, and a lovely dark green. I was shocked. Shocked, I tell you...

Question for everyone about Acorn squash. Got a couple in my garden, but they all seem to get moldy when the fruit starts getting over 2-3 inches. Notice that it starts at the tip, where the blossom is. Yesterday hubby and I were looking at them, and on one of the bigger ones, I felt the blossom at the end and it was soggy, so I plucked it off. It smelled like the other fruits that I had to remove (smells like horse manure). Wondering if that’s the key to keeping the fruit from molding, taking the blossom off? We also cover the plants when we water the rest of the garden, and try only to water them at the root area. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Other than that, everything is going pretty well. My global bucket tomatoes are HUGE, and getting all kinds of fruit. Hopefully here in western Washington we’ll get enough sun over the next 6-8 weeks for EVERYTHING to ripen up.
