The Ms. Alabama Nursing Home pageant came to a close Monday in Hoover with the crowning of 100-year-old Felma Schrimshire, Ms. Andalusia Manor, as the new state representative.
Opelika’s Katherine Sanders, Ms. Arbor Springs Health and Rehab, was named 2nd runner-up.
“It was wonderful!” Schrimshire said. “Everybody has just been so nice and so sweet and caring. It’s just great. I don’t know any other way to express it.”
Schrimshire, who lives with her sister at the Andalusia nursing home, is very involved with many activities at the assisted-living facility, said John Matson, director of communications for the Alabama Nursing Home Association.
“The staff tells me that at least once a week she will take a day and she will go to each of the 154 residents at that nursing home and say hello to them and try and give them an encouraging word,” said Matson.
“She really waved at the audience, saluted all three sections of the audience. She had a very lively presence on stage, and I think that won over the judges and the crowd as well,” he said.
Matson said several staff members from Andalusia Manor were present at the pageant Monday. Schrimshire was even escorted by the assistant administrator.
“They were cheering for her and holding up signs for her, so we know it’s going to be very special for them to know that Ms. Alabama Nursing Home is a resident of that facility.”
Opelika’s Sanders gushed over how nice everyone at the pageant was.
“It went great!” Sanders said. “It was just beautiful, and everybody was just so nice. It was just marvelous, wonderful!”
Sanders was also excited to have made some friends at the competition, and she referred to Miss Alabama Courtney Porter, was the pageant co-host, as “precious.”
