Woods misses cut at PGA Championship

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Say goodbye to Tiger Woods. You won't see him this weekend, or on the PGA Tour for at least six weeks. Woods was 10 over par after two rounds and missed the cut at Atlanta Athletic Club, the first time he's ever missed a cut in 14 PGA Championship appearances, which means he will not qualify for the Tour's FedEx Cup playoff series.

Somewhere, television executives have tears in their eyes. It was the fourth time Woods has missed the cut at a major championship. He previously failed to make the weekend at the 1996 Masters, when he was still an amateur, the 2006 U.S. Open and the 2009 British Open.

Tiger's numbers were uglier than the nation's unemployment figures. Woods followed Thursday's 77 with a discouraging round of 73 Friday in which he bogeyed the 18th hole and suffered back-to-back double bogeys earlier on the back nine after he had mounted a small charge. He made five double bogeys in his first 30 holes here, the first time he's ever had five doubles in any tournament as a pro.

In a nutshell, it's back to the drawing board for Woods on his swing reclamation project.

You may still see Woods somewhere before year's end. He could tee it up in one of the Tour's lesser Fall Series tournaments, which doesn't seem likely, and he's got appearances scheduled in Asia and Australia later this year, but he probably won't be appearing on any TV sets in the near future.

It's now possible that his next official PGA Tour event will be early in 2012, perhaps at Torrey Pines.

Agree. I never blamed the steroids. He had a swing that was going to eventually wear down his body quicker that the old schoolers.

Ten over at the Atlanta Athletic Club after two full rounds is darn good golf.

Don’t feel bad that you can’t do it only a few people in the world can.

Just speculating on news reports I read. Steroids do enhance muscle mass, again, to my limited understanding. And muscle helps make those long drives necessary to a low golf score.

Tiger had his knee operated just before the PGA started testing for steroids April of 2008.

The 03 pic looks like a normal athlete

The later pic looks like an NFL safety

Better living through chemistry?

I’m sure you’ve noticed that pretty much anything Baraq touches turns to sh!t.

Timing and technique are far more important than muscle mass in golf. In a game that is largely mental, taking drugs that increase mood swings and agression would not be wise. On a side note, I do not like Tiger. He is getting what he deserves.

How does a person blow out their knee and hurt their back playing golf?

People can "blow out" their knee getting out of a car. You swing a golf club a few hundred thousand times and then see if you feel any effects.

I don’t have the stats, but I’ve read that golf tv ratings double when TW is in contention.

My prediction that TW will announce his engagement to Casey Anthony and replace Joe Biden on the Democrat ticket in 012 still stands....

And muscle helps make those long drives necessary to a low golf score.

It is not really all that necessary for long drives. Where strength really comes into play is hitting it out of thick rough and bad sand trap lies..

That is ridiculous to compare Bob Sanders to Tiger. Tiger is 6’1” 185lbs, Sanders is 5’8” 206lbs. Tiger isn’t even close to an NFL build. Just because he isn’t a toothpick or a slob like many golfers doesn’t mean he’s juicing.

“Somewhere, television executives have tears in their eyes.”

I doubt it.

Follow the money: His sponsors have bailed. The Woods delusion is over.

I respectfully disagree. The PGA and network television have so much invested in this guy it is unbelievable.

Just a couple of examples:

Yesterday, the PGA championship website was almost 100% devoted to stories about Woods. This despite the fact that Woods has fallen to #30 in the World Golf Rankings.

Yesterday, The PGA website chose Woods' group as their marquis group to be exclusively followed on their own network prior to TNT's broadcast. As Woods imploded on the golf course, you could here the distress in the announcers' voices as they witnessed the unthinkable.

Today, despite Woods' dismal performance the day before, the PGA website literally had a digital clock counting down the minutes, hours AND seconds until Woods teed off (1:45PM).

Today, as Woods' poor performance continued, TNT chose to broadcast just about every one of his shots at the expense of exposure to the leaders who were some 15 strokes ahead of Woods.

Go to ESPN's website and you will see that any story about Woods, will receive 100s, if not 1000s of comments from readers.

The same thing applies to the Yahoo Sports website. Any story about Woods will draw 100s, if not 1000s of comments in response.

Tonight, officials of the PGA, executives at CBS and most obviously, the sycophantic CBS on-air announcers, are all crying in their beer.

The only time I watch the PGA Tour is when I know he's not playing. I'm going to enjoy watching me some golf this weekend.
