SOUL SURFER is the inspiring true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and nearly died, but she never lost her faith in God. Soul Surfer is the moving story of her triumphant return to competitive surfing and has continued to be a beacon of inspiration to all who hear it.
Movie Trailer on link.
As expected, the big Hollywood studios would not touch this script, and few theaters picked the movie up. After all, it was about home schooled Christian girl who had unshaken faith in Jesus.
My hats off to Dennis Quaid , Helen Hunt and AnnaSophia Robb,-the little girl from Because of Winn-Dixie, now all grown up. They excellently brought the Bethanys story to film.
Just rented it and watched it the other night - great movie. Saw the trailer for Courageous and can’t wait to see that one. They pre-viewed it for the staff at my sons’ school and I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.
Saw it last weekend. Excellent movie.

Its a new movie - just making it now to DVD / Blueray. On Netflix though do check out the “Sophie Scholl-The Final Days” movie I also mentioned. One of those movies that will stick with you for a long time after watching it.
Trailer for that.
The “real” non-hollywood story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnyopNkTWsU
Redbox just sent me an email listing it as one of their new movies, so it must have hit DVD recently.
I just checked Netflix and it said the movie is available on DVD, but not on streaming.
Here is the Courageous trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9VT_NBIVfs
This movie is getting a TON of attention. The viewership will be large and it will be another great slap in the face of Hollywood.
Thank you both.

I have surfed my whole life and I took my 13 yr old to see this movie. Bethany is a tremendous person, great role model. Her whole family seems to be quite an inspiration. She has turned pro and is riding giants at Jaws as a tow-in. She can out paddle and out surf most grown men, including me. This is a two tissue movie.......
My only complaints are technical, like saying they are surfing a contest at Sunset when they are really surfing in Makaha. The last wave of the contest is a huge left barrel that doesn’t happen at the break they were surfing, etc...
Most people will not notice these technical issues unless you have surfed in HI.
Not ashamed to admit it to anonymous freepers but, NavyCanDo was pretending my eyes were scratching, so that my wife would not see me wiping away a few tears.
After the movie, it also gave me some good talking points with my 9-year old when I put him to bed. About how life will sometimes throw terrible things your way that you dont think you can overcome, and that we should trust Gods plan in those times. Bethany would have been proud of the talk we had.
The technical issues were explained in the DVD extras. Some of the surfing scenes were filmed at several locations and spliced together so as appear as one location. That sort of film editing is as old as film itself. We don’t surf, but we do frequent hawaii, and noticed the location changes as well. Did not bother us a bit though - it just made us feel like we were Islanders, because we noticed when most didn’t. It was interesting how they made the actresses arm not show up on film. There is nothing they cant do with movie FX these days
No worries... My eyes flowed water through the whole movie. You’d have to be among the living dead not to be affected by that movie.
Talk about a movie that will empty out a Kleenex box. My 12 year-old Shiba Inu is as devoted to me as Hachi was to his owner. I could see him doing the same thing if I didn't come home.
I’ll have to check that out, thanks.
The trailer of Hachi will make you cry. By the way the puppy used in the movie is a Shiba Inu - my dog. The adult Hachi is an Alkita.

I understand the technicals of filmmaking. Assuming you are former USN as I am, it was disconcerting to see Spruance class destroyers and Knox class frigates being bombed by the Japanese during “Pearl Harbor” as well.
That is what I am talking about. I know each one of those waves as do most surfers, even if they have only studied them in magazines. Each wave breaks in a certain way, has it’s own character and personality. Most surfers can do “flashcards” of the top 10 breaks in the world and get 100% correct.
Same complaint goes for Point Break, Blue Crush, Big Wednesday, etc. Goes all the way back to “Ride the Wild Surf” and “Beach Blanket Bingo”
Still, I LOVED the movie and the message.
I didnt realize how unique the waves were from beach to beach, and how avid surfers can name the location by the wave. That is very interesting. One could say the same about the 200+ day a year skiers, who could name the mountain and the run, by watching just a few seconds of a Warren Miller film. We have a friend that can do that.
Got to challenge you though on the movie Beach Blanket Bingo. If the waves were wrong, and we were being fooled, then there is a darn good chance that Bonehead didnt catch a real Mermaid, and that would just dash to pieces hopes and dreams created in a young boys mind long ago. And Im hanging up my fishing pole.
