One time I was listening to shortwave radio (okay I had a glass of Bacardi at the time) and I quickly tuned it to a radio station and was listening to it as I did other work at the desk. 45 minutes later I ask myself "what the HECK is that guy saying!" It took me 45 minutes to realize it was German and not English.

They do say, however, if you ever wondered what English sounds like to foreigners who cannot speak English. The closest language it sounds like is German.

So, I do have that excuse to fall on.

That could be true. When I was an exchange student in France, my French family took me to visit Versailles. Some German tourists were nearby, and my family asked if they were speaking English.

To me, German sounds nothing like English.
