As much as I like and respect President Reagan and regret that I oted for Carter the first time around, I'm afraid he may not have passed the conservative "purity" test administered today.
To: liege
President Reagan was a great man, but he was not beloved by the FReeper-type Right during his governorship or presidency. Their admiration of him is a comparatively recent phenomenon.

You are right on the new purity standards being administered her today. A lot of solid people are being trashed for past issues. A lot of folks forget that Reagan also signed a pro abortion bill in 1967. Everyone makes mistakes.

Reagan later admitted amnesty was a mistake, sort of reminds of Perry and gardisil. We all need to look at the whole record when weighing a candidate. Everyone can be bashed silly when only carefully chosen samples of the record are evaluated.

Agreed. The question for me is, will the candidate for president 1)take us in the right direction 2)offer the status quo, or 3)take us backwards. If that person convinces me he will advance conservatism then I will vote for him. I am not looking for the perfect candidate.

Reagan’s Amnesty didn’t work as he intended. If it had, it would have meant limited numbers and a secure border.
Those touting it as a reason to give amnesty are intellectually dishonest and show an utter lack of moral courage.

Sorry, "intellectual dishonesty" is having different standards for one person than those you have for another just because it is inconvenient for you to be reminded of the truth.
If Reagan was running today, folks like you would be slamming him as a "RINO." That is apparent in your continual assault against Perry.
If anything, Perry is more conservative than Reagan ever was.

Comparing Reagan on amnesty in 1986, would be like comparing Reagan’s concentration on terrorism to George W. Bush’s after 9/11.
To: b9
More lies from the sliming right extremists. I've met liberals--lots of liberals who have a firmer allegiance to telling the truth than people like you do.
What's the matter, can't argue for your choice, so you have to tear down the other candidates by telling lies? Doesn't speak very well of your choice, nor of your ability to reason.

Well-said Sir!
others here refer to errors when
“when only carefully chosen samples of the record are evaluated.” of their Candidate (Perry).
yet as you correctly point out, they hypocritically do the same to Reagan.
Reagan was lied to by Democrats, who broke the deal.
but he learned. some modern politicians have had decades,
and still haven’t learned.
...and as b9 correctly points out, Reagan never supported groups that would destroy America.
Reagan would never have been endorsed by La Raza or C.A.I.R.

You have a very short memory span. Illegal immigration was every bit as big a controversy for conservatives back in 86 as it is today. Reagan's decision on that cause a lot of us who were big supporters of him considerable discomfort.
Reagan was as wrong as wrong could be on illegal immigration and amnesty back then and conservatives were very critical of his decision. We still loved him, because we weren't focused on just one issue and we recognized his greatness.

No thanks...I’ve read the real deal on Perry and moslems...I do my own research...not some bias slanted crap. Dr. Jack Wheeler has also done a whole lot of research and says what you people think is total crap, in other words...NOT THE TRUTH.
