So it’s out there.
Well the water from Katrina was nasty. I had a few thousand rounds flooded so I had nothing to lose. The bullets were already starting to rust. I actually put the bullets in a wheel barrel and washed them twice with fresh water. Liquid wrench cost a 1.50 a can at dollar general so it was the cheapest stuff I could find. I coated the bullets with the liquid wrench and then mixed them up well for the sole purpose of preventing any more corrosion.
Me? Oh, no. I would never do such a thing.
I did take my kids on a canoe trip down the C&O canal, once, right in DC - and showed them some things of interest. Potassium nitrate deposits on the rocks, some funny yellow powder leaching out of the soil, and some bits of charcoal. I pointed out that these things may be of interest. All the while singing, black-white-yellow six one-two oh-eight ... dunno why, some little ditty that stuck in my head.
Must have been a holdover from my mountain heritage.
Who knows - I have these hillbilly flashbacks. Some days, I even think my niece married my nephew, but then I remember that they got divorced. Thank goodness, they are still brother and sister.
I forgot to mention that I had some Russian ammo flood too but it did not fare so well. The majority of them fired but more than a few were dudes. I guess the ChiCom crap was meant to take alot of abuse. Of the thousands of 22 rounds I had only one of 22 that I tried fired. And the one that did fire did not even have enough power to cycle the bolt. I threw them all away.

That would burn underwater - or in outer space - but would not produce a fart.
Saltpeter is the oxidizer, charcoal the fuel - or cotton, or sugar...
Though I agree with you about gun cotton. That never worked out in pool halls.

Here’s couple of mixes found online:
Usually black powder is a mixture of saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal. Also a black powder without any sulfur yields good results and produces even less smoke. (For how these ingredients are made, see the previous chapters).
A reasonable recipe is a mix of:
100 parts of saltpeter,
18 parts of char coal, and (Parts given by weight)
16 parts of sulfur
100 parts of saltpeter and
24 parts of char coal.
Looking at your mix I would think it:
61 saltpeter, 20 charcoal, 8 sulfur
Perhaps you have it correct.
