That would be too stupid to be believed in any modern military unit.

I don't think you are familiar with the workings of a combat platoon. Almost certainly, there were multiple guard posts on duty. This guy was only one of a few, whether on a perimeter, or a front line barricade of some sort.

I was trained to participate in an Infantry platoon.

Even in this case here not everyone was asleep ~ that just doesn't happen.
