No knowledge of economics?
Here’s just three of many examples I can cite which prove you wrong:

I’d rather read a book.
Good for you. Read fast before the government takes them away.
Luntz is the current P.T. Barnham.
I like to read books myself. Sometimes I like to watch a good movie and sometimes I like to watch a sporting event that has piqued my interest.
Are there any other fascinating topics you'd like to discuss?
On the same topic—the damage done to our culture, and to individual lives, by television is beyond measure.
In my opinion, the benefits of television are not real. That is, when a person stops watching television, there is no loss to quality of life. In fact, I believe quality of life improves significantly as the person spends more time actively responding to the real world.
Sporting events are enjoyable to me, especially college football. Therefore, I'll watch a few games on the tube.
You indicated you were interested in an answer to the question "why watch television." I've answered. I'm not particularly interested in why you don't watch it. Cheers!
The act of terminating cable service and eliminating all television from the household is very satisfying.
Not to mention avoiding movie theaters. To know the liberty of never having to subject myself to the garbage coming out of Hollywood brings me great peace and serenity.
