MIAMI (Reuters) - Hurricane Katia weakened to a tropical storm on Saturday and was forecast to wobble back and forth between hurricane and tropical storm strength far from land in the open Atlantic, forecasters said.

Katia did not threaten land and was out in the Atlantic, about 430 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. It was moving west-northwest on a path that would take it safely west of the mid-Atlantic island of Bermuda on Thursday.

Computer models showed it turning north after that and then northeast and away from the East Coast.

The weak stream media has already dropped coverage of this storm. It didn’t live up to it’s “K” status like Katrina.

If Katia was projected to hit any of the same area hit by Irene then they'd be all over it. Some areas simply couldn't handle any heavy rains after the flooding of Irene.

It's still way too early to predict anything.

We persuaded our 19 year old daughter to return upstate from NYC for Irene. We live upstate - it was much worse where we live although not as bad as Schoharie and the Mohawk and Vermont. We live in a 1740’s Dutch stonehouse and they knew how to build above flood waters.

However - the Hannacroix creek Raged just under us and we were happy the Alcove Damn was sound - the Gilboa Damn was quetionable at one point.

We were without powere for days - the 19 year old went back to NYC STAT. Irony, funny.

Sure didn't work out as expected. I looked at what would have been a feasible escape destination for people in the NYC area and western Pennsylvania was about the only place.

WTF? Katia is in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Jose is in the Atlantic.
