Canadian MDs consider denying fertility treatments to obese women

Canadian doctors are considering a policy that would bar obese women from trying to have babies through fertility treatments – provoking debate over whether the fat have the same reproductive rights as the thin.

Some studies find obese women face higher risks of medical complications while trying to become pregnant through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The science is not certain and some believe a ban would be tantamount to discrimination, yet a growing number of fertility doctors worldwide already bar treatment based on a woman’s Body Mass Index.

“We’ve had many angry patients say to us, ‘This is discriminatory’ and I say, ‘Yes, it is’ But I still won’t do it,” said Arthur Leader, co-founder of the Ottawa Fertility Centre. The facility where he works will not treat women with a Body Mass Index (a measurement of weight relative to height) of more than 35. A BMI of 30 meets the clinical definition of obese.

I’m pretty sure a veterinarians perform IVF on big fat cows. Same principle. After all, children are simply livestock commodities.

This is so stupid. At 5’4” and 175, I was chubby, but hardly a walrus. (size 14)

So many women with fertility issues have PCOS, which has obesity listed as a symptom. These poor girls can’t get a break.

That was a large part of my own problem. On a perfect diet of 1200 calories a day, I still gained 10 pounds over 2 months.

I cut out the carbs - cured both problems.

Marie it is quite simple. They are going for the “master race”.

Now here is the catch. Women with larger hips and thighs do better at childbirth than women who are beanpoles. You will never convince these idiots of this however because they “know it all”.

there's a difference between obese and morbidly obese and i think the latter should be right out for IVF as just too risky... there's a reason nature makes it harder to conceive under certain conditions

Chode, I remember a story on FR about a morbidly obese woman who went to the hospital complaining of stomach problems. What was wrong with her? She was in labor and did not know she was pregnant to begin with. The baby she delivered was fine, as was she. That actually happens more than you think with morbidly obese women. Being morbidly obese is hard on the body yes, but as far as childbirth is concerned I have never heard of any problems with the babies they delivered. Pardon the bad jokes but I guess the reason being they baby had plenty to eat and was kept very warm and safe from impact.

Cool tagline.

IVF is incredibly expensive, hard on the body, and has a low success rate. Efforts to improve the woman’s general health, instead of further traumatizing her natural system, might make it possible for her to conceive naturally. Natural means, including better nutrition and training in fertility awareness, produce many more successful pregnancies than IVF.

i was under the impression Canada has national health care... the women are paying taxes true, but without private insurance, the government calls the tune as to what they will fund

if i'm wrong, my apology

if the government, meaning taxpayers, are paying for it i agree with the doctors. if the indiviual is using her money, that is her decision.
