Do you think debt collectors should be given access to your cell phone number? Not sure. Doesn't this open up the whole issue of cell phone privacy? No. Cell phones are meant to be private, not for use by bill collectors and solicitors. Yes. A lot of people use their cells as a home phone, so what's the problem? Other (post a comment).

Privacy and identity theft is the crux of this issue. I’m a big believer that those who hold our most precious data (our private data and credit history) need to be 200% accountable if our info falls into the wrong hands. Your cellphone number is yours because you are required to pay for usage.
If businesses gives out credit so they can profit based upon credit agency info then they both need to be held big time accountable if the wrong people get the wrong person’s information. If they go after you for someone else’s error or negligence then they should be held accountable as in paying big $$$$$ in penalties.
The only person that currently pays a price of harassment or cell phone, or credit degradation is the victim of identity theft. That’s wrong.
Same thing happened to me a few years ago. The calls went on for over a year, they finally threatened to shut down my cell phone. THEY DID! Verizon couldn't figure out how they did it.
In our case, I think my number was the deadbeat's number, although at a different address. As for the start/stop--what happens is that they resell the debts to other collectors for ever lower percentages. The new owners call until you tell them you never knew the person and have been getting these calls for years, and then stop. Then they sell the debt to someone else, and it starts up again. It's slowing down, though.
I changed my number, got a number that used to be had by a Sunshine McElvey. I got so many dunning phone calls, I had to change my home number AGAIN.
She apparently didn’t even pay her child’s lunchroom bill, even the school was calling all the time.
Cheers!
No, that was me. I like to lay in bed at night and random dial until I hit a business answering machine and then leave drunken messages.
T-Mobile lets you block up to 10 calls. No other cell phone provider I was with would let me do that. It is great. I had someone calling and calling and would not leave me alone. I never hear from them now.
It is real easy to jerk their chain though. Keep them on the phone a long time. Speak real quiet so they have to turn up their headset volume and then yell or blow a whistle.
Poor bill collectors. They take such abuse.
Everyone has to have a hobby. I admire your dedication. :)

Yes. I don’t care in the slightest how many grifters and con men get my cell phone number. I like getting scammed, so my creditors should pass the number out at will.

If the bill collecting lobby was not putting so much money into the campaigns of politicians there would be a law against calling cell phones.
