Well, I don't believe kids actually read the news...now or then. Did you?
I guess you would first need to define kid
I always watched the 6 pm news with my Dad because we were required to stay quite then so he could hear it.I started reading the paper once my reading skills were good enough to read it probably by 9? I was eased differently and my parents thought it important that I remember history as it was happening from the Kennedy assassination when I was 3 yo to the first moon landing when they got me out of bed to watch live on TV.
I don’t think kids are reading it on the news but I believe that it blares on radio and TV constantly so I believe they are seeing footage of the mother, photos of the child, interviews with police etc - watching it on TV.
I didn’t specifically seek the news casts as a kid but I might be in the room, on the floor, with the ‘Toons part of the newspaper spread out on the carpet before me as the evening news was read. I remember my mother being shocked by a news cast that showed a person breathing their last, by the side of the road following a police shooting. She was horrified that it was put on the news and that I was present to see it. But now parents are often not in the room at all.
I believe kids now see news clips and interviews with teachers who have sex with students or mothers who are believed to have harmed their own children. I just wonder what that does to the world of ‘expectations’.

I was about 8 years old when I read, in the newspaper, of a very young girl having a baby! I scared my folks to death by telling them I wanted a baby too! (That was about 5 1/2 decades ago...I barely knew the difference between “us” and “them!”)
