Confirmed: "Country Legends" WMC-AM (790) in Memphis to flip to sports

The change will come on Monday when WMC-AM (790) will drop "Country Legends" and become a sports/talk station as "Sports 790am." WMC will be affiliated with Fox Sports Radio, and will be the home of some St. Louis Cardinals baseball games. The lineup will include Zakk & Jack in mornings, with Jim Rome from 11am-2pm, Fox's "Loose Cannons" in the afternoon, followed by Petros & Money and Fox Sports Tonight from 9pm-12am.

The new affiliation with Premiere's Jim Rome was revealed earlier this week, and the Memphis Board of Radio-Info.com speculated about a change to sports by Entercom. The company already operates "ESPN 92.9/680." Entercom VP/Market Manager Dan Barron says, "Sports 790am will provide another platform for Mid-Southerners who are highly engaged sports consumers and will be a complement to our other brands...We love sports and have discovered Mid-Southerners do too."

The next couple NLCS games will determine if the Cardinals keep playing, of course. I have visited Memphis before and was pretty sure AM 790 was carrying the Cards at the time, or at least their minor league Redbirds...so a classic country station gives way to sports. Entercom, the owner (which, as it says, already owns ESPN 680/92.9) does well with sports especially in New England where its' WEEI has branched out onto various stations, including FM in immediate Boston area for the first time)

Thats too bad. I can pick them up at night here in E.TX.

Anybody seen this monster buck taken by a bow hunter in Smith County TX. ( near the Sabine )?

Thread jack? No. The guy told us he was listening to 790 in his truck on the way home, singin’ along to “ A Country Boy Can Survive”.

Would you look at the time.... gotta suit up and git.

Well it has been everything else. Just what we need another sports station here in Memphis.

That’s funny! I live in the next county and can’t get WMC-790 after dark.

Yup, guess it was a sports station before, too.

The 680 in Memphis was Air America at one time then flipped to Fox Sports and then ESPN, IIRC. I have visited Memphis a couple times. Most recently, I was in town on a Sunday and as I drove into town to have a little fun and music on Beale St.,
I got to hear my Red Sox get thrashed by the Yankees :(
on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball on AM 680 and FM 92.9

Sports “bills well”; that is, even if they don’t get good
ratings, advertisers will spend $$ on a sports station. (Boston has two biggies, Entercom’s WEEI and CBS’s WBZ-FM
The Sports Hub, battling it out...)

Below: approximate NIGHTTIME reception of WMC 790. (I will note when I was in Memphis I was staying just south of town in Horn Lake, MS and found I got the 92.9 better than the 680 as I headed into Memphis.)

The Country Gold station here in Columbia has came and went in terms of formats. I haven’t listened in a few weeks so it may have flipped again.

There never seems to be a saturation point for sports radio stations. I do a fair amount of road warrior in SC and if I can pick up anything in the middle of nowhere it is either some religious radio or endless sports radio stations.

I don’t know much about the business of radio. Are people listening to ipods/ipads/computers and not radio when they want music these days?

So radio only gets used for talk shows and sports?

I was born and grew up in Memphis, and lived in the area until 1999.
WMC was among the first and a great station, and carried Rush in the 80s.

At some point they put a black guy in charge of programing
and Rush was dropped.
It was a very stupid move, but Memphis was flipping racially from 60/40 w/b, to 40/60 w/b.

WREC picked up Rush and became the main talk station in Memphis.

I was not aware that WMC had gone to sports.
I would just as soon watch paint dry, as listen to sports on the radio....well, except for maybe a few UT football games :)

Anyway, I started international traveling in 1999, and left the area for good in 2004, so my information is a bit old.

>>> I live in the next county and can’t get WMC-790 after dark.

Now you can, if you still want it. Terrestrial limits don’t matter for stations that also broadcast online. I find it more convenient to bookmark various radio streams around the country in Winamp then to worry about the lousy reception my worn out boombox receives.

>>Who listens to music on AM anyways?

Not too many people. There are ethnic stations with Hispanic or other types of music, some “True Oldies” stations (the owners don’t know what else to do with them), or oddities
like WJIB AM 740 in Boston (Cambridge). A 250 watt signal
(but being low on the dial, it can travel far—though it’s maybe 5 watts at night!), they have “easy as the breeze”
music, standards and oldies, and no commercials (he raises
money from listeners even though they’re a commercial station). The hippie owner says he doesn’t want ads for
“snake oil remedies” on his station, and has been heard to say on air: “Cut up your credit cards. Most of the companies are evil.” :) He has a similar station in Maine.

Less and less people are probably listening to music on radio thanks to Ipods and such. Though music stations can do well.
If anything, AM radio is dying (even though Rush Limbaugh helped to save it some years ago). Crappy reception—
power line interference, stations that change direction
or go off at sunset—had pretty much limited AM to talk
shows, news, sports, ethnic, children’s (Radio Disney), etc. Now some sports, news, and talk stations are moving to FM
for better coverage.

This leads some people to say, “FM should be for music,
we don’t want talk”. But some people who like music
may well be abandoning music for Ipods—or other
things like satellite radio or HD radio (I have both;
the latter as a $40 portable). Sat. and HD have all kinds
of channels with various formats not found on regular
radio.

Anyway, formats like talk and sports do attract advertisers and yes, maybe music listeners have found other options.
(I’ll add audiobooks too, as an option people have found.)

Well as I said WMC is scheduled to flip to sports on Monday but I wonder if they will offer classic country online.

I will recommend something called Screamer Radio—google it.
It’s a free download for your comp. and gives you various radio stream options; not just conventional broadcast stations
like talk, country, NPR, rock, etc. but also some websites
that only broadcast online. If you want something called
Kickin’ Country, you can get it. All kinds of options via
your computer (and also it can record off the application if need be)

Ah, thanks for the info. I’m in Boston and into a bit of sports myself—baseball etc.—and we have a lot of sports talk radio and games up here. (Poli) Talk radio fan too.

Thanks for the interesting comments.
Here in Indianapolis, the Rush show was switched from AM to FM couple years ago (same family of stations).
The AM station went all sports, the FM station which was formerly music, is now all talk and news.
