PDF?? Adobe?? Updates? Huh???

You really, really do not want to disable the updates.

Were you aware that a majority of viri are getting through your security software, due to huge, gaping holes in Adobe software? This is why Steve Jobs went on record, stating that he would NOT allow any of his mobile products to support FLASH. He planted his feet and said not only ‘no’ but HELL NO!!

By turning your updates off; you might as well disable your anti-virus programs too.

Get a Mac.

Everything on my Mac auto updates. Most ar kind enough to let me set that as a default. Usually it tells me there is an update available, do I want to install it., which means it communicated without me asking. Secret doesn't mean much in the online world we live it.

Flash is itself a virus as far as I am concerned. So is Chrome.

I have not disabled updates and in fact have had no trouble since I installed MicroSoft Security Essentials instead of AVG and ZoneAlarm, updated Flash (again) and set the settings on their website.

That said I have never had a virus since I began surfing the web in '97 and I used a box with W95 w/no anti-virus at all for about a year around 2000.

Very annyoing indeed. What bugs me more however is windows up-dates. You load them, shut down, restart and whats the 1st thing that pops up? “You have new updates available”

While I understand your frustration, some updates cannot be applied until preceding ones have been fully implemented (meaning system reboot for registry changes). That’s why you get updates immediately following an update.

Anyone who’s installed a fresh OS with zero patches will be in for a multiple-hour update session because of just this reason.

Much obliged and of course thank you. I had Adobe Writer for many years to edit and send all correspondence to an entire engineering firm, especially the financials that no one could edit (AR). What I don't want to experience is NOT being able to open or view a file that is sent to me in private, whether I can edit it or not, and not being able to view it at all. Redundant I know.

Is what you are saying, “Adobe Reader takes up a lot of space but using another viewer is better and faster, just keep Adobe anyway...” ?

GDIPLUS.DLL is apparently part of the .NET Framework package, I copied a 2005 version over from another machine and FOXIT installed clean. (as far as I can tell)

What else do you have to do when you update?
You have to check they you read the fine print in the software agreement.
Ever think that with constant updates they are luring you into checking the box without reading it?
Ever wonder if one day you will check the box without reading it and find that there is a clause that allows them to seize all of your assets?

Running Acrobat 9 on my iMac. Practically every day I get a message from Adobe asking me if I want to upgrade by downloading Acrobat 8.3.

No, it's even an earlier add-on. Microsoft offers the redistributable package with it right here. Looks like there isn't much else to it besides the DLL file.

Another advantage in installing packages instead of copying a file would be in automatic updates - but you should have no such concerns with Win2K. Uninstall is also easier if you have a catalog of what was installed and where.
