Word For The Day, Thursday, November 3, 2011 - metemperical
dictionaries ad nauseam | 3 November 2011 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 11/03/2011 4:37:37 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

metempirical \met-em-PIR-i-kuhl\, adjective
1. Beyond or outside the field of experience.
2. Of or pertaining to metempirics.

Example sentences:
...but the quality of her innate wit had deepened, strange “metempirical” (as Van called them) undercurrents seemed to double internally, and thus enrich, the simplest expression of her simplest thoughts.
-- Vladimir Nabokov, Ada, or Ardor, a Family Chronicle

Still however, instead of aspiring to becoming rigorous and metempirical, poetry lives by the heart, the sense and singing.
-- Kahlil Gibran with Andrew Dib Sherfan, The Third Treasury of Kahlil Gibran

Etymology:
Metempircal derives from the Greek words met- meaning “beyond or before” and empirical meaning “experience.”

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

LOL. At least his “dialect” is genuine and not like Hillary’s Affectation! Eek!

The detective noted, “I never metempirical evidence I didn’t like...”

Ryan Miller’s performance last night was nearly out of the bounds of experience — pulled after 3 early goals & booed to boot.

I hate VS games at home, too; no HD coverage here and the Sabres always seem to do poorly.

It’s only November. Not worth getting that worked up about.

Right now I’m finding the whole filed to be metempirical. Who knew I’d end up missing TPaw.

‘Not really all that concerned yet ... BUF has a habit of coming out of the gate slow, then kicking it up near playoff time.

Booing by the home team is extreme. Does Buff think it’s Philly??? Bryz is about ready for the nuthouse after playing there!

If you don’t boo someone, they might not know they suck.

That’s a horrible way to begin a marriage.

Well, I’ve got no problem with paying customers booing professional athletes/coaches/referees if they feel the need.

Not kids, but pros.

That’s unfortunate. I like Ryan Miller and miss his commercials. We hit the skids after a fabulous preseason so I can empathize. Our college team seemed jinxed by TV coverage and always did poorly when we were able to watch them. We called it the TV curse.

Personally, I would love Newt as Veep. He’s about a thousand times smarter than the doofus holding the spot now. And that is with half his brain tied behind his back.

Life is what you make it. My college roommate’s younger sister got pregnant her sophomore year at Pitt to her boyfriend. TheY had a shotgun wedding over the summer and once the baby was born their siblings helped babysit the baby and they continued on with their schooling [they lived in an offcampus apt]. He is a dentist, she is an OB nurse. They had 4 boys total, baby Danny is 35 years old and they are still happily married. they had familial support and strong religious faith. xsboy’s friend and his wife have both as well, and i have hope that they will have a happy life together as well.

You know how rare that is. An obvious exception to what usually happens in that situation.

And i wasn’t insinuating that Booing be banned. i just think it’s poor form as a fan, to boo a player who may be having a bad game. It’s low class, and Philly takes it to an extreme with hurling stuff to the ice etc.

While lamentable, knowing these kids, i don’t think it’s horrible. Her family was pretty fanatical, tried to break them up for years. Middle-easterners with cultural differences don’t make for the best inlaws. The dad was transferred back to Lebanon, so i think they will be fine living with or in close proximity to Stephen’s family.

You guys have nothing to complain about. We’re stuck with Steve Mason in Columbus.
