Hey, it only seems like this LSU at Alabama game is the most significant world event since the continents had whatever falling-out that caused them to just kind of drift apart.
Tigers-Tideoh, its big. Its bigger than big. Heck, its gooder-than-grits big.
However. Oh, yes, friends: however. Although this is the first time the SEC has given us a 1 vs. 2 matchup before December, and although its college footballs first November 1 vs. 2 in five years, its just one of a ton of such games thatve been hyped second-coming style.
Why, no ones even calling it the Game of the Century. (Why doesnt this game have a great nickname? Maybe the Gooder Than Grits Bowl?)
Nebraska-Oklahoma in 1971 was a GOTC, but The List wont include it among this grouping of great 1-2 matchups. Why? Among other reasons, because The List was toddling along at one year old then; why pretend to have reveled in that game, let alone anything more dated?
But also because the end of that 35-31 classic (won by the Huskers) provides a nice starting point for the next phase of great-game history. So, here are The Lists top 10 regular-season 1 vs. 2 matchups since the Game of the Century:
2. Miami-FSU 1991
3. USC-Oklahoma 1981
4. Notre Dame-FSU 1993
5. Miami-Oklahoma 1986
6. Notre Dame-Michigan 1989
7. FSU-Florida 1996
8. Iowa-Michigan 1985
9. Florida-Alabama 2008
10. Oklahoma-Nebraska 1987
Nov 16, 1957...I was ten years old...my dad was a huge ND fan, and I can remember like it was yesterday how excited he was when ND ended Oklahoma’s 47 game winning streak..
Granted both teams are good, but on the other hand, both teams have not really been tested.
Who wound up winning the championship in 2006?
If you remember Bo died the day before that ‘06 game. In the book that came out a few years ago called War As They Knew It the writer mentions it was perhaps a fitting tribute to Bo that both OSU & UM lose their bowl games big after that game since in the 10 year war the winner of that rivalry only went on to win the Rose Bowl once (OSU in ‘73 season).
I think to date that was the best college football game I ever saw.
I think to date that was the best college football game I ever saw.
I should have added that at 3:53 left in the 2nd Quarter of this LSU/Bama game is really a great game.
