The time we had a serious chance to break it's hold was in 1898 with the fall of the Mahdi. The west had battle fleets and Maxim guns. Modern armies with secure supply chains. The other side had swords and a few obsolete muskets. They could have been annihilated and Christianized. But that would have greatly expanded the British Empire and the growing power of Britain was more feared in Germany than what at the time appeared to be the impotent force of Islam. The Germans backed the Turks and started selling modern weapons into the region. It wasn't enough to save the Ottoman Empire, but it forced the Brits to cut deals with local warlords like the Hasimites and the house of Saud in order to secure their frontier during WW I
