I was doing some work with the museums in downtown Santa Fe a few years back. Some of the guys told me that while they were tearing down one building to build a new one, they discovered an owl’s nest in the attic that was full of dog and cat collars.
For any locals there, it was a building right behind the Palace of the Governors. This was 2005-ish.

The coyotes have taken at least one, maybe two cats. And as I mentioned in another thread, the coyotes likely killed one cow and two dogs(one of which I found half-eaten 50 feet from the house).

People tend to ignore the fact the “wise ol’ owl” is a predator,a meat-eater, not a nuts and berries bird.
Just like the “noble” eagle is a bird of prey;which is why Ben Franklin thought it unsuitable as the symbol for our young nation. However based on the manifest destiny, and latent imperialism of the government and many others, the bird of prey turns out to be a realistic avatar.
Why we should even need or want an animal symbol is another matter.

We had a big old cat named Bob who was in the front yard after a fresh snow. The tracks showed an owl tried to pick him up but he was to heavy. He was smashed in the snow, dragged then dropped where upon he shat. Ol Bob never went outside again.

I had one of these very large owls buzz me at dusk as I was leaving work one evening. Came up from behind, so close that his wings poofed my hair which startled me, and he swooped up to the roof and parked. What amazed me was how silent he was with such a
huge wingspan. I would expect at least a little sound of air movement, but there was none. A bird that big could easily carry off full-grown cats and similar-sized dogs
...which might partly explain why there are no outside cats in my east mountain neighborhood...

Heres a little tip for the folks in Albuquerque. If ya own a pet the size of a rabbit dont be surprise if critters try to eat it. Get a bigger pet!Oh most know. We got hawks, eagles (maybe not in the metro area), owls, other raptors, coyotes, mountain lions, bears, wolves (haven't heard of a wolf in the metro area, but we have had all the others, including bears). Chihuahuas are a big percentage of the pets here. They disappear on a daily basis around town. We lost a cat several years ago. Ran out the front door on us and never came back. It's life expectancy out here on the west side was less than a week.
