Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

Morning to all. The buttercrunch lettuce is ready to pick and the beet greens too. Its in the 30's here in the upstate but sunny and should warm up preety good.

I picked the last of the pablano peppers yesterday and mulched between the raised beds.

FYI- We got the mulch for free.
During the spring our local power company contracts out their tree maintenance. We got the name of the company and called and told them they could dump good clean mulch in our yard. It saved them several miles and time to dump it locally.

Mega Dittos for remembering and honoring our veterans, and those who are serving now. I have about just a few minutes this AM. I have to go get ready for the Veteran's program at school.

My granddaughter will be presenting a picture of my Dad in uniform displaying debris from the last German U boat sunk in World War II off the coast of New England. His ship was the Moberly, and participated in the action.

It is a cold day here of 28 degrees. Yep we finally got that freeze. Harvested the corn and persimmons and green tomatoes a couple of days ago. Still have some tomatoes under a double row cover. We'll see later how that worked.

Spinach, tomatoes, citrus, and herbs are all doing fine indoors. Winter garden of lettuce etc. is doing fine under row covers for now.

Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Just heard it is 27 at ABIA, but is 36 at the house. Lots of frost on the roofs and grass here. I don't think it will do much damage to the gardens. My neighbor had several tomato plants that got nipped when we had the light freeze last week. They were loaded with fruit.

Prayers and a hat tip to ALL Veterans of all ages. My two brothers, a sister and two BiLs served in WWII. They all came home, went to work and raised families.

I am having photo storage problems that is giving me fits. Fotki keeps messing with my password for my paid account and Flikr crashes my browser when I try to upload photos. Any tips?

Satan69 posted a photo link on last weeks thread of their Florida garden that was planted on Sept 15th. I just can’t fathom the climate difference between there and here in Eureka Ca...http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/2802441/posts?page=63#63

Just wondering how many of you gardeners are Veterans?

This old combat vet (see profile) has just finished pulling up all the landscape fabric (thanks RD for all that info... it's Great stuff)and the deer fencing from our garden. The "Big Chill" is on the way and we have snow on the ground...

Can't wait to start on next Spring's garden!

Here’s another big thank you for all of you who have served our wonderful country!
We celebrated by posting a pic of our favorite veteran (82 yo combat vet of 26 years; served in Korea and Viet Nam) in the local newspaper.

We had our first hard freeze last night - so its almost all over for the year. I covered a couple of cherry tomatoes and a few bell pepper plants, and they came through okay.

I picked all of the green tomatoes, and the peppers of any size, earlier in the week. I still have a row of lettuce, one of arugula, and some beets to get in.

That’s going to be it for the year outdoors here, but I love reading about other people’s gardens!

pine needles: would they work as mulch? Cover a winter garden with them. Living in South FL we don’t get much free mulch. The palm trees stay green year round...

Nothing new here except garlic & onions.

Green tomatoes, peppers and cukes hanging by a thread and straggling in from hothouse.

Lettuce and spinach almost gone.

Need to plant more.

I was coming home a couple days ago, driving through northeast Nebraska—went past a huge quonset that was painted white except for a red stripe on each end. Painted on the end toward the highway was
“The Home of the Free Because of the Brave”

It sure did look good out in the middle of nowhere. I made that drive a week before- but after dark so it did not show up.
