I travel to Europe frequently. One thing I always notice is that most of folks in most of the EU countries dress in dark clothes. Also, most of their cars are dark or non descript. Without a doubt, they have been depressed for a long time.
Well, mine is a real Pea Coat issued by the U.S. Navy. It is so heavy that I can barely move in it, but oh so warm. 25 yo and looks like new.
My father’s WWII Navy Pea Coat was the finest Coat I’ve ever had.
Have both my peacoat and overcoat from my Navy days...but I need to get my gold officer buttons changed out for black and get the epaulet (sp?) holders removed in order not to stand out too much...
As to the hats someone was mentioning I’ve been looking for a good place to get one in the area. Hardly anything worthwhile that I can find so far.
My 22 year old just bought one ...
and I might add he looked very handsome.
The first thing I said when I saw him was
“I had one of those when I was your age - very classic”.
Might be true of clothing but certainly not of cars, in France, Italy, even England. Garish, Fisher-Price colors have always been popular. In London, I thought it might be due to the frequent grey overcast weather and fog, looking for a little cheer or even visibility. Germans are sort of dour, but seem partial to silver, maybe because it’s their national color for auto racing. Never travelled to Scandinavia, though. Are they partial to dark colors? Japanese are very preferential toward white cars for some reason.
I got mine back in the 80’s, finally threw it out last year when I realized I would never have that body back again.
I had a Navy surplus knee length pea coat in the late 60’s. The wool was so dense that I would sweat if the temperature was above 10 degrees. Had a lot of winter days like in Chicago back then.
My husband acquired his the old fashioned way.....from the Navy :)
I’ve had several pea coats (jacket length) over the years. My camel one wore out a few years back and I just bought a black one on sale.
It’s versatile. You can dress it up with a nice silk scarf and dress it down with a wool plaid scarf so it looks equally suitable with dress slacks and jeans.
One thing that’s all the rage are boots (for women) with high heels. They look great on young people, but not for someone as seasoned as I am.
Still have the one Uncle Sam gave me. I don’t think I’ve worn it but once or twice. It’s too warm for the places I’ve been stationed and on the ship we wear foul-weather jackets. I’ll never get rid of it though.
Maybe I shouldn’t have thrown out my double breasted sport coat and flared slacks with vertical stripes and wide belt loops.
If I need a laugh, I just pull up a picture I was in at a wedding I attended in 1973 in full garb.
I saw them in Target today. I moved along.
Still have mine I was issued in the navy in 1968. They are a lot heavier than the ones you buy commercially.

I know. Europeans and Quebec people act and dress alike. Black clothes, no interest in others, aloofness.

I STILL have my original-issue pea coat from 1959 and it is still in fine shape. Served me well when my carrier was in the Brooklyn Navy Shipyard during two separate bitterly cold winters! Berthing was just below flight deck and the deck plates had been pulled during re-fitting, so we only had heavy tarps over our heads to keep out the snow and no heat. We slept in as many clothes as possible, including the pea coats!
I also had the 13-button blues and they were great (unless one waited a little too long after drinking too much beer). Those baggy blues with zippers that came in later were really ugly and sloppy looking.
