Early risers Saturday will see a total eclipse of the moon low in the western sky, and if the Bay Area's clear weather persists, the sight should be spectacular.
"The full moon should appear even larger than normal when the eclipse is total because it will be so low in the sky that Earth's atmosphere will magnify it into a blood-red monster," said astronomer Andrew Fraknoi of Foothill College in Los Alto Hills.
The partial eclipse will begin at 4:45 a.m. and will become total at 6:05 a.m., Fraknoi said. Totality will last until 6:57 a.m.

I plan to sleep through this one, but, will try to be up for the Geminids on the 11th/12th. The Moon will be terrible, but, if you go out and look, you might just see some very nice meteors.
Astronomy is fun, but, too much of it happens after my bedtime!
Well, I don’t know. Sure looks like the north tower to me.
Better check, I think the peak is 13-14
I was up at 4:15, but had forgotten about it — but did notice it around 4:45 (”WTF?? I KNOW I saw a full moon before bed last night....”); only had a few minutes because shortly thereafter the moon set over the mountains to our west.
Even better. The Moon will be even smaller.
