46 arrested as Occupy Boston camp closed

OVERSTAYED YOUR WELCOME: As BPD Superintendent William Evans put it, the occupiers “overstayed their welcome.” Here is Herald chief videographer Robert Greim’s report on the raid on Dewey Square (see video at link)

THIS IS THE END: Most occupiers said police handled the situation well, but Katrina, who wouldn’t give her last name, expressed outrage that police came in “at 5 a.m., when most people were asleep,” she told the Herald’s Christine McConville.By 8 a.m, the tents and signs were gone, and a graffiti-busting crews were hosing down a sign-filled wall near where the group had held its general assemblies. It seems the occupiers just ran out of gas. Police waited for the right moment to move in and clear everyone out. Will Lynch, 18, of Framingham, knew the end was coming: “I thought it wouldn’t happen, but they showed up, at 5 on the dot. Lynch says he was in the middle of the camp when the raid began. He left, he said, because he is a Berklee College of Music student and he has to prepare for exams. “It’s not a huge shock to anyone, except for the time of the day.”

GHOST TOWN: Dewey Square is coming back to life! The block is being power washed, swept and the ground is being prepped for new grass. There are no tents, no signs, no trash. It’s not the “Greenway” … yet … but they are on the way to recovery.

SCENES FROM THE RAID: Herald staffers report Dewey Square is a muddy patch, but the Occupy Boston tents and mess are soon gone. Today’s 5 a.m. raid resulted in 46 arrests (we’ll know the official count at a 10:45 a.m. press conference at police HQ), but it appears nobody is injured. Many occupiers have now filtered out into the city. Here are a few quick snapshots from a hectic dawn takedown of the tent city …

BPD Superintendent William Evans calmly informs the occupiers time is up today just after 5 a.m. (Herald photo by Dominick Reuter.)

You are under arrest if you don’t leave, an occupier faces the end.

WHY DIDN’T YOU GET BUSTED? Dispirited Occupy member Stephen Campbell, 24, said when asked why he didn’t get arrested, he said he withdrew from the camp early today as the end was clearly in sight.”The Occupy Boston movement as a whole became fascist,” he said, adding he still believes in the Occupy idea but not the organization. “At a general assembly this week we spent four hours trying to evict people rather than focusing on our political causes.”He went on to say the general assembly betrayed the movement, so he left the Dewey Square encampment before he got arrested. He also told the Herald’s Dan O’Brien that Boston police were the smartest in the nation by coaxing occupiers out. “They got Occupy Boston to leave, themselves.”

DRIVE-BY: Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who ordered the occupiers out of the square by midnight Thursday and then took his time before giving the police the green light to sweep in, just drove by Dewey Square for a look-see for himself. He waited, waited … then moved as the tent city had almost cleared out on its own. * * *

OCCUPY ALERT: The Occupy Boston text alert system just blasted out a call to the Boston Common bandstand tonight at 7 for a general assembly. The local arm of the movement is now on the run in the city. * * *

ARREST COUNT: The total arrest count stands at 46 … and possibly more as the occupiers filter out into the city and amass at South Station. * * *

LINKED ARMS: The South Station arrests were made after the occupiers pushed out of Dewey Square linked arms blocking the street in front of the station, the Herald’s Dan O’Brien reports. * * *

Earlier:
POLICE MOVE IN: The raid kicked off almost exactly at 5 a.m. Herald reporter Christine McConville reports the occupiers are flying into a frenzy and running from their tents yelling for every to to “WAKE UP!"

Herald reporter Dan O’Brien says two people have already been arrested as police in riot gear sweep in the encampment clearing out the remaining 20 tents

Boston police have also just sent out an email telling media to see the BPD PIOs (police officers in charge) to be set up to record the end of the Dewey Square encampment. * * * Occupy Boston has sent out an alert … and Occupy Yell … “We’re now getting raided. Come to Dewey Now!

I expect to see a DUFU later as The Pittster has avoided arrest (but really wishes he was there to get arrested)!

Stop arresting people and turning them loose the next day. Gve them 30 days and they will think twice about wanting to be arrested.

Katrina was outraged that the woke them up at 5? Katrina, most people get up to get ready for work (it is something that you create wealth for doing something for 8+ hours a day. Of course, you want us to pay you for not working) at 5.

LOL, what a hardcore revolutionary!

Bet this guy had a Rage Against The Machine poster on his bedroom wall in junior high.

Boston police have also just sent out an email telling media to see the BPD PIOs (police officers in charge) to be set up to record the end of the Dewey Square encampment.

I was in that area Monday morning and afternoon.
NECN (New England Cable Network) had a camera set up nearer to South Station which was focused in on the tents. It appeared they were ready to film any interesting activity that might break out. (South Station is in the background of the top photo of this thread.)

With today's TV cameras you don't have to be close to get some great shots because of the incredible photo lenses the cameras now have. Actually being a little more away allows you to see a wider area, and close in on the point of interest.- tom.

And put them in a tent city like Sheriff Joe Arpiao in Phoenix does. Then they can live in tents at the city's expense except away from the adoring media.

”The Occupy Boston movement as a whole became fascist,” he said, adding he still believes in the Occupy idea but not the organization. “At a general assembly this week we spent four hours trying to evict people rather than focusing on our political causes.

Any student of human societies (or just a literate person) could have predicted that. An isolated group of people ... what do they do? Initially they are brothers and sisters, all equal. Then some animals become more equal than others. Their political opposition is exiled. The rest ("the workers") are prohibited from leaving because the leaders derive power from their following. Give them a few more years and you get a miniature copy of USSR, with a Party in command and with drone workers doing all the work, brainwashed by the ideology.
