Except my dyslexic 9-year-old son just finished reading them. He might need something a little more challenging. They are great books however.
My just-turned-17-year-old loves just about anything from www.ThinkGeek.com. He is getting the "Khet 2.0 Laser Game" for Christmas.

I know people don’t like giving gift certificates, but they really are appreciated and he can get what he wants.
For video games, Skyrim is a great choice if he doesn’t have it.
When I was about that age, I loved going to Putt-Putt for Mini-golf and playing the arcade games. So a fun gift might be $50 worth of arcade tokens. Or if you are near one see if it is possible to gift him a pass to Six Flags or equivalent.
If you are only going to see him on Christmas this won’t work, but if you live near him, offer to treat him to an upscale restaurant (ideally without his parents).

If he is into reading I would suggest a Kindle Touch Wi-Fi and 3-G. I have one that my 17 year old drools over, I may just give him one for his birthday next month.

I home schooled my nephew. He wrote his GED essay about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity: Explaining the Equation. He passed, of course!

Get him a nice set of basic mechanic’s tools. He’s 15, so “gotta get a car” time is not far off!

My dream present at that age was a date with an exotic dancer.........just a thought. (He’ll appreciate you forever and probably will visit you in the old folks home)
I like the idea of the Kindle as a gift. But don’t you think the Smiley’s are a little difficult for a 15 year old? They are so intricately plotted.
That book had a more profound political effect on me when I read it than any other book.

If he has a guitar, buy him a XBox or PS3 game called Rocksmith. It uses a real guitar as an input device. It costs more than your intended price range, however, you get to drive your sister/brother and spouse crazy while he plays guitar as a video game for 3 hours a day. Well worth it!, giving a copy of Rocksmith to my younger cousin this weekend just to drive my uncle crazy.
